Changing your sprockets will not give you any more torque but will create that effect  And first gear is tall even with lowered gearing

I'd say 16 / 42 was too low and I'm sure it has been tried (Honk?) but why not give it a go. It'll only cost you £15 and if you don't like it I'll give you a fiver for the 42 rear

No - I run 17/42 which I believe is a perfect compromise

Don't want to start a debate but I personally will never fit a 16t front

well Ive just been on a test ride with the 16/42 sprockets ,its a lot smoother in first gear, the drive out of corners also seems smoother and on the motorway at 6000rpm its doing 95mph so for now i cant see any downside ,i have a 17 front but if i put that with the 42 rear i would have thought its the same as 16/39,,,any input ?? :? :?

Gearing wise 17 / 42 is broadly the same as 16/39

If you are happy with 6k rpm at 95 and a top speed of 120 then I'd say keep it. It's not for me though.

I would say give the 16 front a go. I've just done a chain and sprocket set and the front that came off was 16 (39) rear. It had done 26,000 miles with no problems so i dont see a problem running the smaller front.
For ease of assembly i will prob go with the larger rear at some stage as changing the front is a bit of a pain. Took about 4 goes to get the gear lever back on in the right position

These are the speeds that you will acheive with the following ratios
@ 6000 R.P.M. :director:

Front Sprocket/ Rear Sprocket/ Speed
16 / 39 = 173 K.P.H.
16 / 42 = 160 K.P.H.
17 / 39 = 183 K.P.H
17 / 42 = 170 K.P.H.

Enjoy :thumbleft:

not sure if the numbers above are real world ,take the 16/42 thats 160 kph or 99.41mph,thats 16.5mph per 1000rpm now if your still with me that's 148mph@9000rpm,, it didnt do that with the std gearing ,,that's assuming it will rev to 9000 in top and with the low gearing it should !, anyway it still feels a lot better and is still capable of breaking every speed limit in the uk
