Its dead- * UPDATE*17/11/2007

Post by Omegaman » Tue Oct 30, 2007 10:41 am

My trx played me around this morning , wheeled her out and started her ( just ) she proceeded to pop and fart for a few minutes , I was unable to get her to rev without stalling; she smelt very rich and sounded like she was only running on one cylinder. she then stalled I then ran the battery flat

any suggestions , im thinking it might be a plug or a poor battery.
the petrol smelt rank not just the usual rich smell.

cheers james

Omegaman pull off the vacuum hose going to the fuel tap and check for fuel. Could be a split diaphram in the fuel tap.

if its not been started in a while, change to some new plugs.. Happened to me, same symptoms, worked a charm.

Hope it works out well for you.

PS: the guy i rang who advised on the plug issue.. Its to do with the white ceramic part of the sparkplug.. They absorb moisture. So if you leave them sitting and one of the valves is open, moisture eventually gets in and the plug doesnt get enough chance to dry itself out..

goodluck

charged the battery yesterday and then tryed again last night , was about to give up then she started sounded okay, seemed to run okay too so took it for a spin and felt okay.?? i had the plug out ( left sat on the bike ) and it was like new , so i think its the battery not being at full capacity thus stopping it from firing ( timing ) correctly BUT i coult be wrong ......ill let you know

OH NO ITS BROKEN DOWN AT WORK !!

It started ( eventually) struggled cleared after 500 yards then halk way to work ( about 2 miles ) started backfiring and misfiring, i had to hold down revs at junctions and was really struggling to have any pulling power or stop her from stalling

just made it to work and she has cut out and wont start

PLEASE HELP

there's a whole host of things it could be

battery
plugs
clogged air filter
water in the fuel
valve clearances closed up

try the easy stuff first - plugs, battery, air filter...ditch the fuel and put fresh in.

did it ever fire up first press of the button? if not then it could well be valve clearances.

is there oil or white gunk in the water? head gasket.

is the choke stuck on?

emulsion tubes?

broken float?

fuel pump diaphragm?

The battery was on the optimiser for the last two days and showed green
the air filter is a New K&N changed about 3 weeks ago at the same time when i changed the oil and filter too.
Bike always used to start very easy first press with no choke required ( i checked and its not stuck on :? ) , now it just turns over and wont fire , checked the plugs about 2 weeks ago and it looked like new (left side sat on bike) all carb pipes are back on in the right place after i removed the tank and it was running fine for a while ( 2 weeks after service ) TRX is kept in a dry warm garage and not run in the rain and i havent washed it recently enough to have pushed water through it.??

i will have to check the oil for head gasket but i topped it up 3 days ago and was okay then.

confused and its stuck at work

Have you turned it over with the plugs out (on ground) to see that they deliver a nice spark?
What IF you use a lot of choke? What happens then?
If you chuck out the air filter, what then?
Do you get fuel? Do you get to much fuel?

My money is on the vacuum feed

There is a black rubber pipe that connects to the fuel cock - that will either not be connected or kinked

It sounds like fuel to me too...

Had the bike been standing for a while before you started using it?

What's the inside of the tank like?

I had a problem with mine and rust clogging the nylon petrol tap gauze... In the end I hadto take the little plastic one off and use a secondary in-line filter instead. I was amazed at how much crap it caught in the first few days.

try starting it on PRI on the tap. doesn't need the vacuum then. if it starts ok, you have indeed squashed or kinked the vacuum hose.

Thanks for all your replies Guys i have wrote them all down and when i get to work tomorrow i am gonna try a few out and see what happens

as for some questions - Greg:- its only been stood for a few days to a week max over the last 2 months and the inside of the tank is fine as far as the eye can tell me

Killerwhale:-If i use alot of chock she will fire up ( thats the only way she seems too ) but then stalls again soon after

gonna re-check all the pipes again try Martins suggestion on trying it on PRI

only other thing i can think of than what you have already suggested is my mate was adjusting the idle tap/screw and put it up to about 1500rpm and i have now moved it back to around 1000 after asking on here what its ment to be( 1150rpm ) and i started noticing since this she is now sitting higher than normal around 1400 after she gets warm ever when i have pre set it at 1000 before i go out from run in :?

running rich. emulsion tubes are worn.

don't set the idle too low. the oil pumps are driven off the crank.
