could it be that your block hasn't been machined flat, if the head seems ok?

the head i had suffered a head gasket failure. bloke i bought it from was adamant about it. put it on the surface plate and there was only one very small area that i could get the feeler gauge under.....it looked fine on the glass. it was only about 1 thou out but that was enough.
After sanding i can see that it has taken out a bit just where the head wept first time around....but those wet papers didn´t last long...

I presume You tightened the head bolts with a torque wrench? But did You re-tighten thme after running the engine? If I re-call correctly, I was too lazy last year, and that might have been the reason I blew the gasket. That was a first-timer for me then, no gasket failures before, but I'll make certain I do the re-tightening before I whip the engine next time. Better safe than sorry... (Note to myself, schedule this before upcoming weekend's 3 days trackevent...)

You won´t belive it....just in from the garage and when tourqing and re-tourque and tripple tourque head was OK on fourth time re-check. It then dawned on me....did NOT do this first time around so i did the rookie mentioned above as well.

Ran it up to 100 degrees just now and will re-check bolts tomorrow again before fork goes on.

Installed the new camchain also...timing correct first time trying and everything spot on! Glad i did it now cause there where no clicks at all left in the tensioner!

Well, it´s only time....

Thanks Hasse....you where spot on all the time!

Think the copper spray-a-gasket (wich is banned in Sweden due to it´s cancerogenic compounds) settles after a while and then you can tourque it some more...Sölle racing had used that on gasket nr.2....and it held together after i took out the plug thingie....good stuff that is!!

So do you just run it in the garage before stripping again? I have the problem of having not found an insex for my tourque wrench wich goes into the camshafts holes so either it´s "by feel" or strip the camshaft....and i really really really don´t want to do that again!!

I wondered about re-torqueing after running the engine but couldn't see it in the manual.

Maybe it's just me being anal, but yes, I re-tighten the head after a couple of "heat-cycles"... I have ca 250 kms on the clock since last re-assembly, and will definitely do it before the track weekend. I've found a 1/2 " hex socket that fits (think it was at Mekonomen), without the need to remove the cams (which nowadays would scare the shit out of me :)).

The spray on thing sounds weird, never tried it, but hey, I am by far not the knows-it-all guy. Good to hear though that You found the problem.

Well you know, it's probably no bad thing to retorque the nuts, but to be honest I don't think it's neccessary. It's not called for in the manual, and to do it you have to remove the valve cover and coolant pipe - 2 pita that can just lead to more leaks.

I guess if you´ve done it 4 times and the wrench was not at 10Nm only once it would be an idea...
I didn´t do it first time....that´s why i didn´t think of it this time and this mess made the bike stand a week longer!

10 Nm? On the cylinder head nuts? They should be 40Nm.

Only the bolts inside the camchain tunnel are 10Nm

Fooking ´ell, well THIS is what´s happened. And i have both Hayne´s and the service manual in the garage...I´ve probably only looked at the left side of pics....damn damn damn....and lucky i wrote this here otherwise gasket two would have blown!! Off to the job and get the large tourque wrench then....

I´LL JUST SHUT UP NOW THEN!!!!

ps. I´m amazed over the copper "spray-a-gasket" now...it has held out with 10Nm for a year!
(i know i didn´t tourque it 40 as my tengtools only goes to 25....)

....and when checking clearences 4 valves where off....

...I just don´t have it in me ordering shims and fix the 4 valves just to re-shim everything when new head and cams are ready to go on.

Think i´ll ride it as i own it a while.... :!:

now repeat this a 100 times:

RTFM, RTFM, RTFM...

:D

No wonder You blew the gasket! When You say you retighten, I hope you don't just do that, but that You back off 1/4 turn or so...

Did not need to re-tighten when the big tourque wrench was out....clicked at 40 and then it was 40!
Had to use hands on one bolt though....just could not reach it even if i bought JULA´s longest 8 (mekonomen didn´t have any...)

If i have looked in the servicemanual all would have been OK as there are arrows to bolt´s with spec tourque.
....i checked the list in Haynes and was sure the one´s to be tourqued at 40 was the head bolts in the frame.
Guess it´s due to a tad bad english as well....

So...now i only got: 4 valves with close to no clearence...a valvecovergasket wich started to leak due to excessive off/on...a fun bike....wich REALLY needs an oil cooler!!

Well, i can say that for having 4 valves out of spec. it goes like a mofo (in a good way)
Tried a little "motoman" today even if the bike´s been started....pulls like a train right to limiter. Will actually go back to 17/40 now so we get some speed as well :)

Will try to get a dynorun asap before tornado cams and an insane head...game is on...it´s my bike against a Swedish Highland superretard twin....will be tuff though...
