New DVLA Laws affect the supply of Number Plates

The DVLA have announced that from 1st November 2008 it will become an offence to supply number plates that do not comply with the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001. There is a maximum penalty of £2,500 and/or suspension from the RNPS register for up to 5 years. This offence will apply throughout the United Kingdom.
In order to comply with the British Standard each number plate must be marked with the British Standard number and the name or identification of the component suppler in the bottom right hand corner, e.g. TP BSAU 145d or Tennants BSAU 145d.
The name and postcode of the supplying outlet must also be displayed in the bottom centre. Please note that website addresses, phone numbers and logos are not allowed.
It will be an offence to supply a non-compliant number plate that displays a vehicle registration mark (VRM) issued by the DVLA. It will no longer be allowed to sell products as ‘Showplates’ or to ask the customer to sign a disclaimer that the plate is not for road use if the plate displays a VRM.
The Register of Number Plate Suppliers (RNPS) system is being extended to include Scotland & Northern Ireland. All number plate suppliers must register with the DVLA and obtain an RNPS number to be able to purchase materials and supply plates.

At present the space under the registration number is being used by many suppliers as a way of advertising. This will no longer be allowed on the number plate, it is legal to to use Lipped Plates to advertise below the actual number plate area. Lipped Plates are available from Tennants at £2.45 per plate. well i think what i will do is have a twice size one on the back or bigger say 3 feet by 2 feet should be good (1m * 600 )

Good and bad:

Bad for us bikers, although I'm not sure of the point of a small plate as it's just giving plod an excuse to give you a tug. Looks cool though

Good to stop all those car drivers who buy plates, then try to slant letters/bunch them up/put studs on/write in weird fonts etc to make it read like something slightly resembling their name: they wind me up!

Bet they will still be available on ebay etc but under the name Wall Plaques or something similar!

Getting them is one thing but if plod is instructed to start pulling people over and dishing out fines (or if it bceomes endorsable) then I'll be strapping the big yellow Norman shield on the back again

Equally, if it is mandatory MOT failure .......

My plate only contains 6 characters so an 8 x 6 is legal (as opposed to the usual 9 x 7) but it still looks crap IMHO

Will endeavor to find out If there will be specific op to target bikers without the new numberplates (as is mine, small and no logo).

We have nice discrete number plates. Often wondered why the poms have those huge plates as our speed cameras have no trouble picking up our plates....

Well like the new SORN legislation, handing out tickets for undersize plates is just a money spinner for the turds in Saville Row suits(put on government expences of course) that claim to run this country of ours.
