Valve seals

Hi all,

Ok so after not using trixy for a week it'll smoke a tad at startup, and early this year found right hand plug had badly oiled up due probably to the short winter startups once a fortnight and does seem to get through the oil although doesnt seem to smoke when running.

It's a 50,000 mile motor too and although the clearances were done at about 40 thou i think theyre still ok.

The real q is are the valve seals/guides much agro to change cos if they are would i be better off just picking up one of the two heads on the bay at the mo? also i dont have anywhere under cover to do the deed hence thinking a head swap will be a one day job - well once i get the damn headers off!

Just a thought Steve but how do you know that the seals on the one you buy are any good, at least you know that yours will be sorted, and you can check valve and piston clearances while your at it.

Yeah i know where you're coming from, even if i don't plan to use the bike a like to have it usable - if a job's gonna take more than a day at this time of year it'll likely end up taking weeks what with the weather and those luvvly temperatures and having nowhere under cover to operate is a real pain in the ass.

One of the heads is from a 10k mile bike that lost the crank due to oil shortage and the other has been ported/valve seats/cam slightly re-profiled an stuff.

Kinda looking for a quick and easy fix really

Get yourself down to B&Q for a gazebo for starters, keep the rain off your head. havent looked at the price for the heads, but If you think thats the best. Just a thought but when you've taken the head off yours, cant you strip it inside the house in the warm? (And yes I have previous for emtying engine oil over my bedroom floor, and using the oven)

Theres also an full akra 2-1 on that'd be tempting but i want to stick with two cans as it looks better balanced.

Think i might end up need somewhere to live if i tried taking bits indoors, got seriously frowned at just for mentioning sticking one of the twin projector jobs in the oven so i could clean it up!

Might consider the gazebo idea though and just do it when the weather is too cold and slippery to ride and take trix to bits then over a week or six!

you are going to need somewhere warm and dry if you intend to rebuild the head ,,i have just done mine , its not a hard job but you will need plenty of light , have you done this sort of thing before ?? also i would not use pattern stem seals ,i know they are cheaper but its not worth the risk , and also use a yamaha head gasket ,,,yamaha stem seals are £3.82 head gasket is around £40 , my stem seals were not that bad ,it was the clearance on the piston to bore, mine had worn so bad i could get a 0.3 feeler gauge down between the piston and bore , and i blame the emulsion tubes for causing the ware also when you start getting the engine in bits you will probably find the cam chain is worn , check to see if the marks line before you pull it apart

Its all down to cost at the end of the day, Sometimes you can only afford to replace the bits you need, no extra for the cam chain or anything else, on the other hand If your cute to the misses ( read cheat and lie ) Its amazing what you can get away with.
You could use my garage Steve, just a bit of at trek for you.

still not decided what to do one head has 2 bidders t'other (unmodded) still has none, biggest issue for me is as quick a job a poss as outside and then sort the old head properly when it's a bit warmer(dunno what year that'll be ?)

Then again with it being the dark side of 50k who know what else might want doing? (re: steves cam chain suggestion alos bores perhaps) aaarrgh - maybe apply the "if it aint broke" rule and leave it till sometime warmer!

Oh sod it, i dont know what to do now.....

sometimes it cheaper to buy a new bike !! i bet if i added up all ive spent on mine i could have had a superduke, but then mines a one off and i would not part with it ,,just do your best

just started to replace mine today ,,i measured a pattern one were they slide on the stem of the valve,, and the genuine ones are 0.25 smaller , so its a tighter fit using a genuine yamaha stem seal
