The best thing would be to show your bike to an official expert at the TÜV and ask him what kind of documents he'd need to register your modifications.

Meanwhile I'll post it in the German Forum and will tell you as soon as I got the answer from those who did it.

edit:

Just found this in the German download database which might help you with you problem: a copy of a "Kraftfahrzeugbrief" where a R1 fork is registered: http://www.trx850.de/downloads/yzfschwi ... eidung.pdf
The relevant text passage is:
"MIT GABEL VORNE ... YAMAHA TYP YZFR1"
in line 4 and 5 after the dashed line in the left column.

Hi Holer,

OK, just bouncing this old thread back up as things have moved on a bit.

First, Holer, sorry we didn't get around to seeing you in 2007, we stacked our selves at the top of the Stelvio Pass, so we had to get the GF to hospital pretty sharpish, so ended up taking the train back north. Events kinda got the better/worst of us.

move on 18 months to yesterday....

Back to now, and to the original question, i.e. "How to get a modified UK bike through a German TUV test".

On your advice, we (eventually) enquired at the local Yamaha dealer, and he just shook his head and said "way to expensive, probably more than the bike is worth, too much trouble etc etc etc, you need a headlight, a kilometer speedo, standard exhausts blah blah blah..."

However, once I said that I had already done the light, speedo, exhausts etc, and had the TUV certifciate for the ABM lenker kit, he then said " the problem is the R1 forks, but if you know someone who has done this already and has the documentation( Kraftfahrzeugbrief) to show this, then it should be possible."

Ok, now I have your link above which is halfway there, but, and here is the big question, from the German TRX club, could you find someone who has done the R1/Thunderace wheel front end change AND who would be willing to let me have a scan of the relevant part of the Kraftfahrzeugbrief, detailing the modification. Apparently, if a Kraftfahrzeugbrief can be produced for an identical modification, then all the local TUV guy has to do is check that I have bolted the thing together correctly.

The other option is that the TRX goes back to the UK for those days when GF is in UK (rare), and then we buy her a bike in Germany.
However, if we have to go down this route, then it will cost us a lot of money, and to be honest, if we have to buy a bike in Germany, why buy a TRX of unknown condition, when we could buy a different bike. But Andrea likes the TRX and is well aware of much I have spent on it to get it in the condition it is in now.

As before, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mike and Andrea.

Hi Mike!

Firstly, sorry to hear that your trip ended that way #-o I hope that Andrea is well now - at least after one and a half year she should be [-o<

I remember on the day you had said that you were to pass Munich, it rained quite a bit so I didn't thought you had the time and wish to stay a while instead of driving home as fast as you could ... but that it was by train I couldn't guess :(

As to the Thunderace front wheel: Is it wider then the original TRX front wheel, and if so, could you tell me what size the wheel is so I can ask my German fellows?

And when I'm at it, I will ask whether some of the northern guys know a competent TÜV-engineer between Hamburg and Lübeck

Oh, and some words to your girlfriend:

Servus Andrea!

Investigating greetings from Munich!

Hi Holer,

The wheels are the same, but the Ace has a different tyre profile, the TRX runs a 120/60 ZR17, the Ace runs a 120/70 ZR17.

Appreciate the comments, help and advice!.

Errm, I run also a 120/70 on an original TRX rim ... and if the rims are the same size - who cares?

By the way: The first anwers to my question thereto in the German forum say that there is an understanding and competent TÜV engineer at Norderstedt, Jörg Wagner. Norderstedt is about 25 km from Hamburg.

I would suggest phoning Mr. Wagner and asking him on his opinion.

Google says that the adress / phone no. of TÜV Norderstedt is:
Hans-Böckler-Ring 10
22851 Norderstedt
040 529001-0

I'm starting to think that this TUV "problem" may be achievable after all.

Hi Mike!

Bitte, bitte, gern geschehen!

Keep us posted - I'm curious how fast your TRiXie gets on German roads!

And by the way, if you'd need a scan of a German "Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I (Fahrzeugschein)" with a lot of different tires in 120/70 and 170/60 for the TRX with original rims ... I could help you! 8)

Gueten Abend Holer,

If you could let me have a scan of your Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I (Fahrzeugschein) with the different tyres listed, that would be a great help.

Thanks again for the assistance.

Back from a ski weekend in Going (yes, i was going to Going ...) here my scanned Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I (Fahrzeugschein).

If you'd need it complete with my data on it or at least the data of my TRiXie, i.e. the identification number, please pm me your e-mail-adress, 'cause I can't see any e-mail-adresses here on the forum and I don't want to post those data here where everybody can see it ... [-X

The "hidden" e-mail-adresses seems to be a bug of the forum ... I reported it many many times ago but nothing happened [-(

Thanks Holer,

Been laid up in the Krankenhaus for a week in Bad Oldesloe, pancretitus (screws my spelling up aswell!) or similiar.

Thanks for the info, as soon as I'm well enough and able to ride, I'll pop the bike down to the TUV centre and see how we get on.

Thanks again for all your help.

Hi Mike!

Just read this ... very sorry to hear that you have (what I think is called) pancreatitis ... :(

Hope you'll get well again soon (and reduce your alcohol consumption  #-o  ).

Also hope that we'll meet one day in the real life with our TRiXies!
... and if you'd need any more info regarding the German TÜV I'm always there to try finding out for you!

 Why is it everyone thinks that pancreatitis is always with alchol??? Ich bin antialkoholiker! :D weil ich bin Diabetiker .....

Even the doctors in the hospital said "you must stop drinking.....and smoking"

Then I told them I have never smoked and I don't drink. That confused them.

Never mind, now had 3 weeks away from work, I have lost 7 kilos in weight, and I'm feeling pretty well at the moment.

I will get the TRX to the TUV station.... eventually!

Hi Mike!

Good to hear that you're feeling pretty well (again)!

The thing with the alcohol is that in general (also to read at wikipedia) alcohol is a common reason for pancreatitits - and if you've never been drinking (my respect for this!) that confuses the doctors 'cause (obviously!) they like to have an easy life me thinks (otherwise they would at least try to find out what could be the real reason of the symptons shown).
As you might guess, I have similar experiences ...

Let me know how things went at the TÜV!

Drinking greaztings form .. whadd was this ol' town called again :?:

Yahooo!!!

She (the TRX) passed the TUV test today :D , so now just got to get the plate sorted and we're away at last. What a palaver though, cos its got a new frame "wheres' the frame number?" followed by long explanation. "What year are the forks from?" er...... 1999?, "what bike is the wheel from?" er..... Thunderace..... etc etc etc etc.

Then the emissions test .... baited breath ..... no problems there.
Then the noise test ...... nice quiet stock cans ensure an easy result, but then "That would sound nice with a set of aftermarket exhausts on" says the guy. (Best I not turn up next time with the straight through race system on then ......... )

Lot of hard work, but worth it I hope.

Big thanks to Holer for the documentation assistance, much appreciated.

damn, I miss my TRX already!
