Front sprocket retainer

Posted before re my predicament of losing the thread on the nut, I fortunately had a 1982 RM250 motor sitting in the garage the nut of which was the same thread size. (this the day before I was due to go out on it). That has aradite on it, its going no where now!

just been in there to check and clean ,, and its not moved ,, nut , washer .all ok

Ah but I`m a sassenach,they don`t make kilts long enough for us,we would be exposing our`nuts` to the elements.

Now they might tighten up a bit it`s true but the discomfort would be unbearable even with Araldite,tab washers Loctite or grease!
Commando style and combats,the only way for comfort.

The retaining washer has 2 flanges on it, so it's designed to be used twice. After that, throw it away. They're only $10AUD at any Yamaha dealer. I've gotta buy a new one when I renew the chain and sprockets around Easter time.

i bend the washer over in 3 places, i also use locktite 638 on splines of output shaft, between the sprocket, washer and nut surfaces and on the output shaft thread
i would only ever use OEM front sprockets and replace the washer tab and nut at EVERY retorque

its not worth saving a few quid when the end result writes your engine off
NB : an output shaft is Â£140, a gasket set is best part of Â£100, output shaft seal Â£10 plus oil etc
ie. thats over Â£250 in parts before you even start looking at labour

Hey TonyDevil,I call that the `Belt N Braces` approach.

But hey,if it`s what you need to feel safe,secure and happy and can be arsed to go to that trouble then why not?
As you say,a rebuild is a lot more expensive,and a leg(as your friends)PRICELESS.
