TRX wont start

Hi guys, I bought a 13 year old TRX850 a couple of weeks ago. Picked it up a week last friday and as the weather was a tad rubbish I just rode it home.

Went to start it the day after and it wouldnt start. The dealer told me to wait until the day after to see if I'd flooded the engine. On sunday the same again. They picked it up on Monday changed the sparks then delivered it back to me on the Tuesday. Hooray! It worked. I took the bike out for a couple of hours around the countryside to make sur ethat the battery was recieving a charge. The ride was fantastic. Totally different to anything I have ever ridden.

Went to start it on Wednesday but the same thing was happening. I can hear it sparking but just not catching. They picked the bike up and on Freiday I was told that a rubber seal in the vaccum something or other was knackered. they are replacing it and getting it fixed for the middle of next week.

As frustrating as this is the Sales person at the dealership has been excellent. I bought possibly the cheapest bike in the showroom but he has treated me as though I have bought the most expensive bike there. The shop in question is M&S Motorcycles in Newcastle and the guys name is Ian Frizzell.

Another thing, they have agreed to start my warranty once they have been able to fix the problem with the bike as Ian says "we've had the bike for more than you have since you paid for it". I can wait for the bike. I only want to ride it and for it to be in good working order.

By the way this is the offending bike. Only 19,000 miles, totally standard and a total beauty.

The rubber seal is probably in the vaccum fuel tap under the tank?
Check sidestand cut-off switch maybe too, if its totally dead when you try and start it.

Ah yes! Getting them to run. I have heard of such a mystical beast but have yet to lay my eyes on such a creature.

yes ,,R1 front end , yzf 750 rear wheel with 180 tyre, ohlins shock , 878 cc big bore , fcr 41mm carbs ,plus, plus, plus , the list goes on and on ,, glad you like it

If I was you and knowing what I know and have experienced, I would get them at the Olde bikee shoppe to check your valve clearences.
I had that problem with hard starting when cold and that was wot recified it as no doubt others will attest.
Having said all of that, let me say this, I could be wrong, as I frequently are/am, but if you get them checked and thats not it, well no harm done anyway.



Welcome to the site by the way. You will find that you will get plenty of excellent advice from members of this forum, and then there is always the guesswork advice from others like myself. Thats a nice looking bike, actually.!


Seriously, get your motorbicycles valve clearences checked.

And another thing, seeing as how you are new to these vehicles, check your oil frequently as well,
As these are dry sump, checking oil levels is somewhat different to the norm so hit the search button /find the manual, if you can,

Firstly, A big thankyou to you all for such a warm welcome.

When they bought it back on the Wednesday I asked them to check the valve clearances. I checked on your forum first about servicing and what not and the big thing seemed to be the clearances.

I had been looking for a good qaulity TRX for about a year and found that the members could at diagnose problems and had a huge wealth of knowledge. A site like this can make all the differenece when owning a bike.

The only worry I had when I bought the bike was the lack of old MOTs and a servicing record. As soon as the bike shop have fixed my bike I will be putting it through a full service. As part of the deal they had to replace the oil ands air filter and give it a oil change. They have had to change the battery and the sparks.

Personally I just thought that they were trying to do as little to fix the problem and hope that I would just disappear . At the start they were trying to suggest that it was my fault for flooding the tank . Even going so far as to suggest that I buy an Optimate and keep the bike on charge all night so it gets maximum compression .

I mean it just starting a bike not trying to launch the space shuttle into orbit? Or is it???

This is why I hate dealerships and their 'mechanics'. I think their favourite tool is a big book of excuses. You shouldn't have to keep the bike on charge all night to get it to start. Mine stood outside in all the snow we had and still started on the button when I went to ride it, with an alarm doing its level best to flatten the battery.

I totally agree. I reckon they are pooping themselves as they may be looking at an engine rebuild. Either way i want my bike back.
