Rear suspension unit

Post by dandywarhol » Sat Apr 11, 2009 5:37 pm

I had a trawl through the "search" but couldn't find much/couldn't be arsed reading it all.........

Which other bike's rear shock, std or aftermarket fit the TRX? or, has anyone had the stock one overhauled/improved?

I'll get to the front end shortly - probably go down the Race Tech route - worked wonders on my TeDiuMs
1996 TRX 850, blue, Ohlins 46HRCLS, Race Tech Gold Valves, 0.90 springs, Venom pipes, R6 brakes............
1974 Yamaha RD250A, Candy Blue
1998 Yamaha SZR660, blue of course
1967 Yamaha TD1C 250, Blue and white

I have a standard shock resprung with a Hyperpro spring. Combined with the Hyperpro forks it did the job very well.
I say did, because there's a YZF750 UPSD fork in it right now. An öhlins rear shock (also from YZF 750) will be fitted if it's back from the service. I hope it will get here soon because I found that the standard rear shock is leaking oil at the moment. Surprisingly because the bike only did 30.000 km.

Edit: realising that didn't answer your question. The YZF750 shock fits the TRX, but is slightly longer. With slightly I mean mm's, so I'll just say it fits right in. There are a couple of guys around here with a YZF rear shock, in different versions but most of them are öhlins.

Weren't the YZF750 units just badged "Ohlins" because Yamaha had just bought / bought a significant stake in the company? That was what the UK press implied during the 90s, IIRC.

I went with a used Ohlins TRX shock myself. Before that, I had the stock one which had been rebuilt by a now-defunct UK suspension specialist - very harsh and too much rebound damping - not much better than stock really, but at least it lasted well after the rebuild (9 years).

Yes after starting to rebuilt front end suspension..I need to rebuilt the rear end to complement the work being done at the front..With 98,000km's up on the clock I'd say its well and truly due for an overhaul.. Interesting comments you made on the Ohlins unit... Be keen to hear what others have to say or other (makes)choices they have made and responses they have found compared to the original???

Not eaxctly .....

True, Yamaha owned the Ohlins brand (still do I think?) but the shocks they used were not just Yamaha shocks badged as Ohlins. They were developed by Ohlins technicians from Yamaha items but kept to a price so they are not as adjustable as 'after market' Ohlins kit.

Think of them as being between stock items and 'proper' Ohlins stuff.

But, bear in mind that, as with buying any second hand shock, unless it has been serviced recently it will be crap. Yamaha Ohlins YZF shocks will be the best part of 15 years old by now and will need money spent on thm to get the best from them

idl1975..are you saying that the ohlins was too harsh??? with rebound damping dramas??? Too harsh in what respect?? It seems with 15 odd rebound settings(from memory) and 20 compression settings on the std shock alone ...was the issue just in durability and fade?? Or spring rate??? or Does the ohlins have limited adjustment as such??? No offence....Just trying to understand what you where feeling as such

I think you'll find he is trying to say that he has now got an Ohlins shock that he is happy with and that before that he he had a standard shock rebuilt that wasn't much better than stock

I fitted the öhlins shock yesterday and tried it today - I found myself bouncing around the corners! I thought it would be wise to try a comfy setting (had a long tour today) but it really needs some damping. After adjustment it was a lot better. Honestly, I was quite surprised a few clicks can make such a difference!

I had my std completely overhauled, and that made a huge difference (mind you, the rebound damping was f**ked ont hat). The company that did the service also made sure the sag was correct and had to remove material from the spring seating.

Then I fitted an Öhlins shock, and to be honest, the difference wasn't as dramtical as I'd been expecting. And this despite I had it completely overhauled as well, and fitted with a new spring suitable for my weight.

Agree completely with Phuk, any old shock will need an overhaul, just bear in mind how much oil there is in a shcok, and what the shearing over the last 15 years has done to it...

Yes understand completely that one or two clicks can make all the difference. Like tuning your carbies just that little bit more hear or there takes away that dead spot at 5,000rpm just as you throttle on coming out of the corner. Much the same just that slight adjustment can give you a smoother exit out of the corners under power(but maybe at the expense of a little bounce under brakes) But these are the pleasures of knowing the intimate nature of your motorcycle

Individual adjustments on Ohlins shocks do actually make a noticeable difference (unlike stock).

Start of with the base settings above, check the sag (adjust if neccessary) and then go for a test ride. If it isn't to your liking change one thing at a time and make notes.
