gearing what is everyone running

as it says guy's and girls who is running what front and rear. took the trx for a run yesterday in the hills had a ball but the gearing is to long. 17/39 is way to long for me my last bike tls was 17/38 stock but i ran 16/40. i found i was just used 1st gear to much into and out of turns. so give me some hints how short is to short of gearing for a trx

i use 17/42 as do some others,, the problem seems to be that first gear is to tall but the rest are not bad ,, i have also tried 16/42 but it turned into a wheelie machine , and i might go back to that as it was loads of fun

16/40 here but i think 16/39 would suit me better...a little to agro and stops at 220kph on the clock (iknow it´s a tad more with my 70 wheel)

17-42 on mine after asking around on here. Seems about right now. 1st gear was my biggest gripe, having to slip the clutch around mini islands & similar stuff just seemed wrong to me. Still no wheelie machine but it does come up easier now.

I just change the front for a 16 tooth. No chain length issues and cheapest option too!

You sacrifice a little on all out speed (like I'd notice !!) but it makes it much friendlier at the bottom end.

That was what i was thinking. I dont want to have to buy new chain it has one on it just before i got it.
I dont care about the top end i do most off my rideing in the hills

Think I'll be doing the same Dave... 1st is just too tall and it isn't happy in top unless you're doing 125 or so. With the way the coppers are in NSW now it would be nice if it sat a bit higher in the revs at 115 odd. If I reduce top speed to 200 odd it won't matter, and I can always gear it back up for track days if necessary.

And the bonus of the front coming up easier will be nice too.

Started out originally on the std gearing 17/39
then went to 16 /39
then 17 / 41
and am now on 17 / 42 and am very happy. It really suits the bike with all the day to day commuting I do

yer same as killer 16/40 but with his 70 series rear tyres that would equate to the same as running a 39tooth as such due to the higher wall according to the gear commander... and I find its great round and bout just same 220kph is 9000rpm and it takes no time to get there with fcrs n open pipes...

I quite like the stock gearing myself,after some of the machines I`ve owned and ridden with `mans cluthes` the little amount of clutch lever manipulation/slip required around town is easily offset by a bike that`ll pull away cleanly from most things while they`re playing `footsie` on the gear lever!
A TRX`s clutch action is pretty light(if cables are cared for/lubricated,in fact a clutch cable with a PTFE liner is even lighter)so it`s not a problem for me at all.
There must be a lot of folk spoilt by Japanese fours out there.
I also like the relaxed cruising a higher final drive gives,and let`s not forget here that a motor cruising at lower revs(as long as it`s not too low)is more efficient on fuel,plus engine and transmission wear and tear is reduced which is something to consider in these days of ever more expensive motoring costs.
I`m going to try 17/42 when I`ve worn out my chain and sprockets but it`ll be a while yet,until then I`ll continue to enjoy my TRX as she is gearing wise.

I'm running 17 - 40 because that was the last sprocket the chain gang had and I am vary happy with it.Not too radical but much better on take -off.

I'll add to the conversation just for the hell of it. I won't use a 16 on the front, stick with the 17 and maybe put an 18 on it. Chain enters and leaves the sprocket better/smoother the more teeth you have. Not to mention anything about dentures either. Then it would be either 17/41 - 42 or 18/43 - 44. Will do a rpm to gear ratio to speed calc when I do it.

you can use 17/42 with a std chain ,,and yes 17 front is a better engineering option ,,42 is the biggest you can use with a std chain length

one tooth less on the front, think it is 16 so long ago since i did the mod, but was a good one. Still running original rear sprocket and original chain, and bike is coming up to 10yr old... 9.300 miles
