Winter overhaul has begun.....

Evening all,

My winter overhaul in readiness for the 2010 track, Sunday morning blats and September 10-day sabbatical to the Pyrenees has officially begun!I've just ordered some Samco hoses off eBay (£55.95 + free P&P) given that the hoses on the bike are 11-years old now!

Other jobs on the list are:

Valve clearance check/shims as necessary. Mileage is just under 16K currently. Bike will be taken to a mates who is very handy with spanners and he's going to walk me through it so I'll know its been done proper like !

Oil and filter change. OE Yam filter, gasket etc and I might try some of their oil too.

New plugs whilst the engines apart and ancilliaries out of the way. What do forum users recommend ? Stock NGKs or some of those iridium jobbies? They worth the extra?

Swap out my mates 2003 R1 gold spots for ones that I acquired through the year via the PB mag forum. So that'll be new fluid in the lines .

My cans could do with repacking and I might stubby them a smidge in the process. Doubt theres much in them aside from cob webs at the moment !!

I have some Ohlins springs that came with the bike in a box. Fit and fresh oil wouldn't go amiss as I suspect the forks have never been overhauled.

Take off the rear caliper and give it a good clean and overhaul if necessary.

Swap over the clip on mounts and see how this mod feels in readiness for the 600 mile haul down to the Pyrenees to my mates house there .

That little lot should see the bike more than fit for purpose! Hopefully come the spring I'll be in a position to just ride it in 2010 and avoid the need to waste riding time fettling the old girl!

And before anyone start carping on about not riding all year round , been there done that and commuted through several winters and have no need to now so don't ...although my TRX does have heated grips for cold, early morning rideout starts !!

I have iridium plugs, they last longer! Hopefully new chain and sprockets (If i can get a dished rear sprocket!) Bars are raised to the top of the forks with spacer as it suits me, knackered back and all. Its SORN at the moment because I also dont need to ride through another crap wet salty winter, again been there done that, with the T-shirt and the 78.

Excuse my ignorance but what is "SORN" that slow codger mentions? Must be a pommy thing as I've seen it mentioned in a couple of magazines too. While we're on the topic of English magazines - what are fizzy parts too???

SORN - statutory off road notice. basically it measn that you declare your bike as off the road so as not to have to pay road tax. Always struck me as effing pointless as it means you can't (legally) drag your bike out on nice sunny winter days. And all for the sake of saving £5 per month!!!!

Fizzy relates to the Yamaha FS1E which was which a shite 50cc moped (affectionately known as the fizzy!!) which 40 somethings with too much moneu now look back on with road tinted glasses and buying up for stupid money!

VERY serious collectors of `fizzies` nowadays,I remember my own fondly and the registation number.I wonder where GGO 587N is now?

they had a small tank, and didnt go over 50mph!! If you wanted performance from your 50 on the cheap, honda ss50 with a 90 motor in it, (straight fit), or in my case a tuned garelli, tank held twice as much as a fizzie, and mine was 30 mph faster!!

Awww,c`mon a 70mph Garelli,was that going up or down bullshit hill?
Fizzies were often fitted with YB100 motors and AP50`s with GP100 or 125 motors.
Mine was tuned,modified disc valve,bigger carb,ported and expansion chamber etc,would indicate 55 on the flat but the four speed box was the biggest problem.

they did 55 as standard!! you sure you tuned yours?, and yes mine was heavily tuned, and was actually recorded at 80 downhill (By a triumph 2.5 pi)

Ahhh,downhill?
My fizzy would indicate 55 to 58 most of the time(nose on the speedo ) but I was running tall gearing for those precious downhill moments when you could feel like a king of the road!
Downhill it easily went past 68,especially on a nice morning with cold,damp air.
REAL road conditions meant a steady 55 though.
I had a pal with a Casal,that thing revved like billy-o,I always thought it would go bang in a big way but it never did.He was a fat bastad too!
