Conked out this arvo

Hi guys,

poor old TRX died this arvo in the rain leaving me a 3.5km push back to work. Think it's only the left pot and that seems to cut back in at over 3,000 rpm. So I'm thinking crap in the float bowl. I'll pull it down tomorrow after hours and have a squizz.

At least she did me proud with a 1,040k run two weekends ago with the TW forum gang, but looks like she needs a bit of work now.

usually rain + cutting out = electrical issue

and intermittent faults like that tend to point ot the coil

I agree with Pete, check plug, plug cap and coil.

Yeah I initially thought 'lectrix too, but wouldn't this get worse at higher RPMs rather than lower? I thought a low-speed or idle jet might be blocked, strange the cylinder cuts in at 3k rpm.
Anyways, will look at the electricals first as it's easier (and I know more about it) than the carbys.

It might be worth draining the float bowls just in case water has got into them. Place a tin or jar under the drain hoses to collect what comes out, you can see if there's water because the petrol floats on top.

I had a similar problem, it was the r/h side coil faulty. It would also break down ~ 7K rpm or so as well.

How much are coils these days? Are there any aftermarket ones that also fit?

on the Guzzi use to run Bosch GT40 coils.

Thanks guys,

Pulled the tank off tonight and found some water in the fuel line between tank and pump (little vacuum operated fuel pump). Drained it all and checked all other lines and reassembled. Bike seemed to run ok, but wasn't picking up clean off idle, then started to run on one pot then died completely again. Might be some more water in there somwhere, might have to pull the pump to bits. May as well do the float bowls as well, though I think that means taking the carbs off, not much fun.

Just can't figure how it's gotten into the system in the first place. Did over a thousand ks two weekends ago through some pretty ordinary weather and no troubles. Must've burned all my luck that weekend.

Any other suggestions on what to check over? Will check the spark's healthy and may as well pull the plugs while I'm at it... groan.

Do you usually fill up before hitting reserve?

And recently, have you gone onto reserve? If yes, that'll be your answer.

Water can sit / accumulate in tansk very easily. Two of my TDRs have had tanks that have rotted away from the inside due to this problem.

Also check the drain on the left side of the motor. Stick a bit of wire in there to remove any crud. If it's blocked water can sit against the plugs. Water gets in from plug caps not seated properly. Happened to me once in torrential downpour. Every now and again i put a cap of metho in the tank to remove any unwanted moisture.

One other thing to check and that`s the fuel tank/cap recess drain and hose.It`s in the recess where the fuel cap is and if blocked water can sit in the recess up to maybe 15mm or more deep!
It `may` find it`s way past the fuel cap seal.
Mind I have to say the other things already described are much more likely.

Whats the go with the metho as such??? do you drain the tank first or does it react upon the water if any with the fuel in the tank????

Petrol floats on the water Cobba,so if you pull off the hose at the vacuum pump(from fuel tap)use a glass bottle or jar to catch the fuel so you can see just what`s come out,then turn the tap to reserve.
You should get water before you get fuel.Alternatively it`s a drain the tank job,I`ve had to do it before but not with my TRX.

Anyways Monday night before I can get more time to look at the poor old thing. Had a surf through the Haynes in the meantime, but tells me nothing other than more investigation is required - along the lines I've already outlined.

On the metho front, apparently the go is to just run some of that ethanol added fuel once a month. Does the job.
