Hi all i have just bought a 1999 trx and have seen some on the internet with r1/r6 seats/ tail ends, are there any posts on the forum with instructions to fitt them and what mods are needed.

You can mod to quite a few different rear ends and seats, you need to cut off the the rear framework though, use a search facility as it has been done on here a few times.

To be honest, having done it with a TZ seat unit and an R6 one, I wouldn't bother. I was going to cut a load of the subframe away anyway because I never take a pillion so the cutting up of a standard bike didn't bother me much. The standard tail looks fine with the standard fairing, and looks even better with a little more ride height at the back (although the standard tail looks crap if the bike is naked.) To do it 'properly', ideally the subrame needs to be cut right back at the lower mount and rewelded in using a straight piece of tube otherwise it looks crap. Mine has an R6 tail on, not done 'properly' and looks, you guessed it, crap. Good job I'm doing a welding course at college

I have an R1 rear end on mine, have retained rear seat by cutting and strengthening the subframe, I really like the look of the R1 rear esp if your raise the rear end as well. The standard tail just doesn't do it for me and I hate the way the standard rear light sticks out like an afterthought reall ruins the line.

There is obviously a lot of work in that bodywork, and I envy your abilities, but the seat looks wrong with the standard subframe.

Rear light can be sunk into the rear tail piece further, as I did, wasn't a real problem to do, can't quite remember what I did, cut away at the mount under the seat piece as I recollect.

Yep I`ve got twin square LED lights in behind mesh on mine, indicators are hidden in there too.
Looks quite nice, passes the `ticket`, that`ll do me.FOR NOW!

The early r1 and r6 tail units (the swoopy ones rather than the pointy newer ones) suit the trx very well especially if done properly as mentioned before, SDN yours is a very good example and those pics of the welds would be great if you get the chance (requested on the temporary forum) The standard bodywork is fine but i don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to improve and update the looks, a suitable front fairing would be next then upside downies then ohlins shock then fcr's then engine tuning then , er , then go faster stripes and flashing valve caps ,lol

Which is very subjective I love 80s and 90s bikes for the way they look- new bikes are too styled and too pointy. Honks bike looks ace with the standard shape fairing and an R6 tail, but I prefer the Suzuka TRX with the standard shape tail-

I`m not a fan of either R1 or R6 tail units, quite like the `old school` appearance of the standard tail unit too Kayla.
There`s plans in my head (to be announced at a later date) for a variation on the stock tail unit/tank set up theme, as always it`ll be financial constraints that`ll come into play with the planning of it though.
I do think the standard rear light looks naff, but anyone cutting a piece out of the plastic undertray can easily re-mount it flush or even inboard of the end of the tail piece.I like the storage facility of the standard tail piece too, good for a couple of cans or bottle, some rag, tools, roadkill, stolen feral child, whatever your heart desires really!

Yeah, good point standard tail does have a lot of useful storage, the R1 unit does not have as much but as I kept the pillion seat there is a bit. Also in extremis I can take a pillion, though I wouldn't much fancy being on that small pad for any length of time. Lucky for me after being spat off on a diesel soaked roundabout years ago my wife has never wanted to ride pillion ever again.
