This morning I finally got to take the cylinders out to check the engine internal condition.

Image
I'm having a bit of a problem taking the rear lower engine mount bolt. It seems to have seized as well. I didnt try too hard and decided to tilt the engine forward instead in order to gain clearance for the cylinders to come out.

Image
Pistons out and the free play in the left conrod was huge. The right hand one was catching a bit and not moving freely. From the bottom I took out the 4 conrod nuts (not easy) and freed them from the top, taking them out without opening the crankcases.

Image
Image
I would say this engine has been run with no oil for quite a bit for this kind of damage to occur.
Top end looks perfect , although I havent taken any measurements.
I think I'll be needing new con-rods as well and wrist pins.

Now the question. Does anyone have a good crank with conrods they wish to sell for a good cause?

Nice work buddy.

You could give Greg a shout (username). He sold his TRX a while back but had a stack of engine stuff left.

See this thread... http://www.trx850.motomaniac.net/forum/ ... =33&t=5553

He was going to put it all on ebay, but I doubt he ever did :D

Cheers for that, mate!

Anyway, something will come up soon, I hope.

I've got some great ideas for this bike, but first I need to get it running nice and smooth. I'll be fabricating a custom exhaust system like I've done for this one in the past.

This one was too loud although it had baffles inside but no end can.

Rebuild update.

With some heat, a 14mm socket welded to the end of a 10" long round bar and a BIG hammer, the rear low engine mount bolt finally gave in.
The engine's now ready to be removed from the frame next weekend.

[-X No pictures were taken as evidence due to the extreme violence involved in the procedure.

Yes, the bike was lying down on the floor and yes, I did enjoy it =D>

But as you said if you rebuild a stocker it'll be worth feck all, funny that eh? plenty of faster more expensive bikes around with NOTHING like the grin factor of your trx (i hope you know this) I've ridden/worked on too many not worth mentioning.
For not much more money than you'll probably have to spend anyway you could turn your rebuild into a build and take more pride in it as well.
By the way i've never had much spare cash but there's always a bargain to be had somewhere. Evilbay's hodgepodge of great parts goin dirt cheap still amazes me. (got coils for 6 quid , yzf usd forks for for a tenner, front and rear wheels for 20 and more (no engine parts though unfortunately).
I think you need luck more than money, best of anyways, you'll get there no doubt

And the work continues...

I've also tried to get the rear disc out to replace the corroded bolts and that itself was a nightmare. They all snapped even with lots of heat applied to it. Well, its now a much safer disc with m10 bolts holding it.

Image

I've got the engine out , and this was a lot easier than the disc.

Image

I'm quite happy with the fact that I havent spent a penny in it since the starter relay. It's slowly getting its dignity back fairly cheap and I'm also saving for the engine.

Image

The brakes were clean and rebuild (with the same seals) and they will be soon working as good as new, although I'll be replacing the front end after the engine's sorted.

Project update

While waiting to buy an engine, I've been slowly doing some work to the bike, as a way to go through the British winter and not loosing the last slice of sanity.

Here's some photos:

I've now found an engine and I'll be posting about it soon.

"New" engine
Image

New oil...

... and it runs!
Image

Slowly the thing is getting back together. In now need to sort out the exhausts studs with time-serts, I'm sure.

I've been doing little bits and bobs, like removing the rear seat lock, making a plate to cover the holes behing the number plate mount, fitting a smaller reservoir to the front brake master cylinder. I'll be focusing on the special rear light I'm waiting to come in and to fit the shock reservoir this week.
Pictures of all this and more to come soon.
