Kent Cams
A few of you have got Kent Cams and from what I have picked up they improve mid range. Is this correct?
I will be fitting my FCR's when the worst of the cold weather is over, so would be interested to know what the "seat of the pants feel" is to Kent Cams + FCR's.
Is it worth the agro? are there any downsides, I am interested more in a strong mid range shove than huge power.
How hard are they to set up - lots of dyno time required?
Also if they are worth the bother, where can I get them and how much will I pay?
I am probably going to fit a new cam chain some time soon anyway

Yes, Kent cams are designed for midrange. Think they are around £200 on an exchange / regrind basis.
I wouldn't bother with cams unless you are gas flowing as well (IMHO). FCRs will make a bonkers difference - cams and gas flowing less so.

Re: Kent Cams
wow.. thats a nice delivery range.
Whats the exact kent cam profile again ? I seem to remember 8.4mm lift, up from 8.0mm stock. Anyone confirm this ?

Re: Kent Cams
Would like to change my headers for somthing a little less restrictive, any ideas what to go for and where to get them? I have some nice termi end cans which I am very happy with the look of and want two keep the twin cans. What about a two into 1 into two?

Re: Kent Cams
Staintune used to make a 2-1-2 system. Would be worth an email if you are serious.
Cheers,

im tuning an early tdm850 engine to go in my trx i was going to just bigbore it gas flow and kent cam it
can you expand on the diference
ps im fully aware its a diferent engine but whats the general gain ???

if you want more power easily and cheaply, hunt out some flat slide carbs

Re: Kent Cams
sorry poorly written / described
i am putting a tdm850 3vd early engine into my trx rolling chassis
i would like to know what would the diference be if i kent cammed it and flowed the head ( im also boring it to 878 ) how would it perform ? ie more top end ? more mid range ?
whers the best place to hunt the flatsides ? what exactly am i looking for
id appreciate your help people

Re: Kent Cams
My knowledge is limited to the 270 crank as opposed to the 180 but I do seem to recall that the older TDM engines made less power so you are tuning a weaker motor. Why not hunt out a TRX engine and tune that?
Assuming kent do cams for the 180 engine and that the JE piston kit (presume you are using that rather than the yamaha oversized pistons) and that you have the engine flowed / ported to match AND (most importantly jet accordingly) you should see a farily healthy increase in torque and power (I'd be guessing at 10% across the md range). You will have higher compression and cams designed to give more midrange.
Strictly speaking you shoudl also have the cranks balanced for the new psitons but this isn't necessary.
In the UK this will cost you circa £400 for pistons, £50 for rebore, £100 for gaskets and oil, £200 for cams, £200 for gas flowing - a lot of money for less than 10bhp.
Or, and I really wish I had known this / been told this (not that it woudl actually have changed anythign but ...) you can bolt on Keihin FCR41 flatslide carbs and pod filters and jet accordingly and see gains of (in some cases) over 10 bhp on a TRX engine. Second hand these will set you back £500 or £800 new plus dyno time.
BTW, none of the above is worthwhile unless you have a free flowing exhaust - you are wasting your time using stock headers. I've also assumed you can do all of the work yourself.
For a fully sorted bike (big bore kit, cams, flowing, porting, exhaust, FCRs etc) you are looking at over 100 bhp and spending a couple of grand (although in truth I've spent far more than that). For £2,500 you could have my complete bike and loads of spares
Feel free to ask away if you have any more questions.

Re: Kent Cams
The Over Endurance racer was based on the Mk1 180 crank TDM and had some success. Having ridden both 180 and 270 engines in standard form, there isn't a lot of difference on the road - the 180 needs more revs to make it's torque but both ridden at the upper end of the rev band go similarly.
Should't be a problem getting Kent to reprofile Mk1 cams - just give them yours or a spare set to reprofile.

Re: Kent Cams
phuk thank you for spending the time to write that out mate much appreciated
i prefer to the use the older engine becuase i have 3 now ! wanna use em up plus i trust the early engine more so than the trx engine to take alot more abuse plus i love the power on the 180 crank to the 270 just personal preferancce
on the work my girlfreinds dad is a tuner so work is all free
im looking out for a set of keihins but dont know wher to look
i will search my contacts worldwide and get a set if not ill save up and get a set of new ones
who can balance my crank not heard alot bout balancing them i thought you had the balance them more for 2 strokes than 4 ?
thanks guys im off to look for my keihins
