Importing UK TRX to Aus??

Hi

I`m upping sticks from the UK later this year with my whole mob! Gonna probably end up near or in Melbourne as thats where I can get the most work.

I`m undecided over whether to export my TRX over to Aus. I`ve heard that it can be a nightmare with the new emissions regs and transfering over vehicle details etc etc. We`re sending a container so space is not an issue or cost as it`s bundled in with our other tat.

The bike is realistically only worth £1500 so having to pay another £1000 - 1500 to just export it would be better spent on an Aus TRX??


Anyone on here done it? Any idea how much it will cost?

IIRC another lad from here looked into it (albeit he was going to NZ) and it was prohibitively expensive

How about sticking it in the container, buy a frame with the v5 equivalent over there, swap frame numbers/reg and job done... or am I living in a dream world?!

I like the way you think. There`s more Harleys in the UK that have come over in suitcases than have ever been imported whole.

I`d love to do that but it won`t get past customs without an importation certificate. Then I`d be paying storage fees for something that I can`t get in to Aus( or back to the UK!).

I`ve read all the importation procedure which is simple enough and not that much money, just want to know how much hassle it is with the various state codes and if they are going to get fussy over indicator sizes, exhausts etc etc??

If it isn't much money to import i would just bring it over and leave it in the garage until you decide whether or not registration is too much of a hassle. i guess you could always use it as a track bike if everything doesn't go your way?
Though i know i'm stating the obvious, importing would be quite a headache but at least you know what you are bringing over. Having to buy a new one when you arrive means you run the risk of acquiring a lemon and honestly, bikes here are extremely overpriced.
You could find that importing may be worth the cost after all.

I have had a friend bring a TRX in from Japan. He brought the bike less frame over and bought a local frame with Aussie compliance plate fitted. Most state coppers are squeezing us on fender eliminators but the licensing shouldn't be a prob with loud pipes and small indicators. If you have a prob i'm sure someone here would help with a loan of the requeired parts to get it passed.

Crikey! I should sell mine when I get there! I never knew they had that much value down under! Just had a quick look on Bikesales -Aus.com

So after a quick search of the web I found this from someone on an ex-pat forum....

(GET YOUR LICENSE CONVERTED FIRST AT VIC ROADS)

1. Make sure you you use a good importer which cleans and boxes the bike.
2. They will give you the info to pay Tax / Import duty. ($500ish)
Its not over yet
3. Bike arrives (all good) - With all the papers (sometimes you need them to send again ($50)
4. You need to get some engineer to come round and inspect the vehicle (a current list can be got from any Vic-roads office)
5. Pay him approx $250 and he sill sign all the import doco's
6. Send away for a VIN number (this will come in the post) ($30)
7. Take it for a roadworthy ($80)
(you now have 30 days to register the thing)
8. Take it to Vic roads with all the signed papers, roadworthy and sicker that came with the NEW VIN number on it.
9. Pay them 10% of the value of the bike for regional tax + Rego ($600)
(Make sure you undervalue the bike or you will cough but not to low as the vic-road boys are not dumb)


So it`s not looking so bad compared to the price difference between UK and AUS bikes? JUST the 10% valuation which I suppose has to be the local value... I make that lot above about A$1500 ( about £1000) with it being valued at A$6K.

Hmmmm decisions.....I now have a work colleague biting my arm off to buy my bike if I don`t take it!!!

Take the tank if in good condition and motor ...sell the rest as spares before you leave... Check out what you can get on e bay (aust) for a few grand with the exchange rate you'll prob get that...Theres not that much else to them if the others got std brakes, suspension. ...keep which you want Gives you a few spares to sell off to do any upgrades with when you purchase a bike over here

6 of one and half a dozen of the other I'd say . If you could sell your bike for 1500 quid , with the additional money for transporting it you'd have enough cash to buy one here . It's all pending the condition of your bike also and what you have done to it and /or experienced . 2500 pounds should be between 5 to 6 thousand dollars here in Aus , enough to get you a decent TRX .

I'd sell back home and buy in Aus. VicRoads can be a huge PITA, lining up for hours, lost paperwork, etc. I think you'll have enough on your plate just getting setup here already. I picked up my TRX for $3500 with 30,000km on the clock + a full staintune system. A few come up always on bikesales.com.au as cameronjung said.

I still haven`t decided yet ...or even filled in the multitude of forms to get into Aus! I`m not actually gonna be there till Sept / Oct and if I do ship the bike it won`t leave till May. So a bit of time to make my mind up.

Selling it now in the UK goes against all the work I have put in. I could strip out the exhausts / carbs / shock etc and chuck them in the container. I have spares of all those bits. BUT I do like how it is set-up now and would mean starting from scratch again?

I`ll mull over it all for a bit longer. In fact I was thinking of getting it out from it`s winter home in the next few weeks, lets see !

As for supporting Aussie rules teams....I don`t even support a football team over here.....I`ll just side step that one and harp on about Moto GP if anyone starts talking all sporty at me!
