Hi,
This is my first post on here, I used to own a mk1 tdm 850 way back when, and know a couple of the folks on here (dandyworhol etc)
Always said I would come back, and this thread is quite interesting to me

Especially since I have just picked this up for peanuts:

Note the lack of engine....

Good job I also nabbed this for a bargain too:

So I do actually have all the bits necessary to do the conversion in a proper manner, and with a bit of effort I should be able to recoup a considerable amount of the outlay.

The TRX is in really good condition apart from the complete lack of an engine, so the project is to rescue it and bring it up to date with a 900cc fuel injected lump, wiring and clocks, blue spots, braided lines, and I have some thunderace forks, mudguard and clip ons kicking about that may find their way onto the bike - who knows?

Will keep you updated. I haven't had the TDM delivered yet but it should be here this week.

Ian

Bummer! I was about to contact the seller about that chassis - well done for getting in there before me, i logged on to message him & it had just been sold #-o

I might have a few Thunderace parts that might be of interest for your project tho?

Hi coxylaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad - we go back a few years eh? Fed up with 4 cylinders?
Now then dandy, yes we do, in an internet type fashion (I am hoping this is sarcasm and not old age senility creeping in lol), do you remember the carb tuning debarkle I had with the tdm that turned out to be the cam timing had jumped a tooth after I removed the tensioner 'just out of curiosity' :)

Mince I have never met the man face to face, so for all I know he could be a complete weirdo lol

Not fed up with 4 cylinders dandy, I still own the fazer, that will be mine for ever. Its the most accomplished all round motorcycle money can buy imo.

But I do miss the character of a big twin lump. I may struggle with the seat to peg height of the trx, but its for shorter blasts out not long touring missions.

Its a funny thing I was looking through the old Carpe messageboard the other day when I was considering this and did actually post the words 'I will be back at some point' how true :)

So anyways, the plan of attack is this:

1. strip the tdm down and sell the bits off I dont need.

2. Offer the engine up in place in the trx chassis.
3. See what bolts up.
4. See what Mountings I need to make up.

and so on.

My original plan was to turn it into a cafe racer, but I am sort of taken by the charm of the thing now :)

What is the deal with the thunderace forks then? do the forks and yokes bolt straight up?

hello everybody by the way! :)

Buy that SP2 motor I posted up on here, it`s on Ebay right now. That`s a very nice, gear driven cams V twin motor and would make a great TRX special with plenty of grunt.
Killerwhale, (one of the forum members) is currently doing the TDM 900 into TRX frame mod, I`m sure he`ll be along to tell you all that`s involved.

ok freudian slip there, its hard to say twin without putting the letter V in front!

My mk1 TDM was a proper parallel twin, but I test rode a 9'er TDM shortly after I bought my fazer and was very impressed with the way it went and felt.

I am please someone else is trying this too, time for some research I think.
