one cylinder woes

dragged the old girl out last month fitted new tyres ,mot etc, went for two runs last bank hol first one ok, on the second run noticed that the tickover was a little erratic and there was a faint smell of petrol from the exhaust (left hand ).... at speed ( 70 officer honest ) it felt ok pulled fine, put it to bed , came to it today ,after starting without the choke (as i always do) she wouldnt tick over thought i might be going onto reserve so switched to prime for a bit ..still wouldnt tick over and it was then that i noticed that it was on one cylinder ( i know how could i not tell ..theres only two!!! ) splashed little water on yep right hand definatley not working , bliped the throttle afew times and then it kicked in...tickover still erratic and once or twice wouldnt tick over at all..............i have had fitted new emulsion tubes and dynojet kit last year and that made a massive difference and its been fine up to now, only other thing because it was running far to rich before the tubes and kit were fitted never needed to use the choke, after they were fitted still found (unless it was exceptionally cold )that i still dont need the choke...bit worried... what could make the cylinder not work then all of a sudden its back its only done it the once up to today

Has it been stood long?
Modern fuels often go stale pretty quick and water can collect in float bowls due to condensation too, try fresh fuel and draining the float bowls first. If that doesn`t work get the carbs off and check them out for oxidisation etc.

thanks for the super quick reply mincehead ... as i said ive been on two runs over the bank holiday so ive gone through about 25 (gulp) quids worth of the motion lotion so im sure its not that... would that stop the cylinder working ?

You could have picked up some dirty fuel too, it does happen. Drain the float bowls first, check the plug cap and plug on that cylinder, try another plug as that one will be fuel soiled now.
And don`t run it for too long on one cylinder, the cylinder that`s not using the fuel air mixture will be having it`s bore `washed`, especially if that cylinders carb is flooding.
It might just be a plug gone down, again, it does happen.

hopefully its down to crappy asda petrol and the plug ..ill get some new ones in there as soon as i can,is it worth getting some all singing and dancing iridium ones or are the normal ones ok thanks for the advice speak soon

my Trx had the same problem when I bought it, the last owner had changed every electrical item in the ignition in an effort to fix it.I bought a £13 carb kit from ebay changed all the rubber gasket bits in the carb (everything looked ok) and now it runs perfectly....... might be worth a go only an hours work including two brews........Vicar

Personally I rate the iridiums, my bike runs `cleaner` with them anyway and they`ll outlast the copper cored plugs.
