R1 upside down forks

Post by SDN » Sun May 29, 2011 8:33 am

This afternoon I am going to replace my forks with 98 -00 1st gen R1 forks, but first of all

The R1 forks are shorter than TRX standard forks, do you have to fit the clipons below the top yoke?

if you fit them above the top yoke, what effect does it have on the handling?

Lastly, if you want to retain standard ignition barrel / steering lock , do you need to grind the steering lock off the headstock and re-weld it on?

Would be grateful for any tips

hi SDN yep the clip ons will fit on below the top tripple clamp..but you WILL need to find a set of high riser clipons as the handle bars will be then too low..you can ride it but it will ride like a GP racer..on top of the tripple will bring the nose down and change the angle rake...a touring conversion clipon would do the trick..yes,,you will have to cut the angled lip off your steering lock base bracket on the frame as the bracket will foul the ignition caseing ...turn the steering to the left when it is all set and you will see...my yzf 750 front after i fitted it measured about 10 mm lower to the outer fairing bolt..cheers

I got a pair of LSL tourmatch (silver) for 50mm fork wich raise 50mm, they are clamp type so can be taken off/on without removing top yoke. Just sitting in the garage so could be for sale...
