Running w/o air filter

Last night I was installing the new KN air filter I bought for my TRX.
I discovered that so far this season, I've been riding without an air filter! It was there last season (that's why I bought the KN).

I guess the garage where I kept the bike this winter took it out because they told me my old filter was finished (I knew that!) and wanted to sell me a new OEM at twice the price I paid for the KN.
Anyway, just venting.

Here go the questions:
1. This season, I've noticed my economy drop from >200km to reserve (last season) to ~180. Could this be caused by riding w/o an air filter?
2. I don't think I've noticed any change in engine performance (comparing to riding with an old filter last season). Isn't this strange?
3. I've replaced the oil before before this season started, and have gone ~1500km w/o an air filter. I've a sneaking suspicion that I should change the oil again - should I?

200km must be stuck in a lot of traffic

Answers:

1 - yes could be. Or it could be due to many other reasons (eg worn needles). See what you get with the K&N in.

2 - not really. The airbox is very restrictive and the removal of a filter will have allowed more air through but you have probably ridden around it (much like people who ride on worn tyres and badly adjusetd suspension)

3 - yes.
