In line fuel filters

Post by Wombat » Mon Sep 05, 2011 11:06 am

Where on earth can you fit an in line fuel filter on the TRX? Notice I'm getting a bit of sediment (no it's not rust - checked with a magnet). Bike decided to falter a bit when trying to do a u-turn this afternoon, was running fine before that, but I'd just filled up so might be a dodgy dose of fuel. What does everyone else use filter-wise? And where do you get that green see-through hose from?

Use a longer piece of fuel hose and one of the really small 1/4" sintered filters? I have put a longer hose on for the time being while I am playing with carb jets so I don't have to disconnect it when lifting the tank. It curves a bit and is not pretty but it works.

17 pages of the stuff on Ebay Aus Bob, I searched for coloured fuel hose first but it seems to only be listed as in the UK.:

And in line fuel filters, the cheap see through plastic types can be replaced as you see them discolour with any contamination, or buy a better quality type with a glass sleeve with can be unscrewed and cleaned out.

There's a tiny in line filter in the tee piece at the carbs - see it's not blocked - some folks remove it altogether but it is there for a reason.......................

Hi Bob,

No idea on the green stuff, but I bought a metre of Tygon for the Norton and have quite a bit left over. It's yellow, very flexible and transparent. Hideously expensive, but lasts forever. Intend to replace fuel lines on both the Ducati and the TRX with it. Let me know if you want some.

I also run a sintered filter in the fuel line. Never seen any crap build up in it though, which either means my tank/fuel is always good or it's a useless filter!

Edit: This might be the go for you:

Yep Tygon is the stuff you want, 2075 or 2275 being the types best suited. Withstands all petrochemicals and the 2275 will not allow hygroscopic fluids like brake fluid from `creeping` past at clamps either.
HRC do some green tubing (rear master cylinder reservoir replacement) supposedly designed for brake fluid but I know it sometimes creeps fluid, I`ve lots of pals constantly building specials who have reported back to me about it not doing so well over time.
The Tygon hose is incredibly flexible, will not distort in on itself at bends, withstands photodegrading, won`t shrink, won`t go `milky` as it doesn`t absorb anything it may be carrying and lasts for years.
Sadly nothing good is cheap, never is.
You`ll find it on Ebay but you`ll also be able to buy it cheaper elsewhere and not sold in the rip-off foot lengths either:

Where'd you buy it from Dave? I'm after a length for the line between the tap and the fuel pump - or would I be better off getting a std Yamaha part? ços I know one end is 10mm and the other end is 8mm (I'm guessing)

I'll have a look on the weekend Bob and see if what I've got is suitable to replace what's there and do so if so (I think that makes sense). Will advise.
Ride Well!
Cheers, Dave.

On that emurdock site they have a 50' roll of 5/16" ID Tygon tubing for $61.00USD. With the exchange rate that works out $57.00AUD. Not bad I could use all I need then sell off the rest.

Dave, could you take us a photo of where you've placed your in line filter?

Had the tank off yesterday, should have taken a pic then. Pipe's been run out towards the LHS where the little filter is and then back in. Will take a pic later Bob. Did you get my comments on the correct Tygon size to buy on TWF? If you're buying some, please put me down for a half metre if it makes the minimum order length a bit easier on the wallet.
Ride Well!
Cheers, Dave.

Faaark, we're getting ripped blind here. That's a good price. Might take a while to flog off though.

Hi guys, I've used the Tygon yellow hose for years on my vintage MXers & trials bikes - it lasts for years & only seems to discolour if using blue 2 stroke oils in the fuel (no problem on the TRX though eh!) I got mine at the local lawnmower shop - you may have to shop around to get the right size though - some shops only had the really small diameter stuff in stock.
Once you've had black - you'll never go back!
