Coming home from work down A435 tanking alon when noticed police camera van on top of bridge, slowed down but don't know if I was caught, anyone know anything about these speed traps, how far away they can trap you etc. Was probably doing about 90, slowed down to 70, if i am caught what points will I get? Fingers firmly crossed

Firstly what is the speed limit on that road?
If it is a normal speed trap would they not have to book you straight away?
If it was a camera then obviously you have no reg plate on the front so all good there, unless there was two cameras one on each side of the bridge.
Might it have been a tax camera?

Camera range from a van can be half a mile plus!!

If he got you face on though, you should be ok (plates on the back) unless he spun round and wrote your number down, but even then its an iffy your word against his.

Roughly under 10% over limit and youll get off it.

Over that, up to 99 its about 3 to 6 points and maybe a fine too?

Don't be jumping for joy to soon mate, police camera vans have both forward and rear facing cameras, if you trigger the camera facing you it will also take a picture of you after you have passed the van, normally from a camera located inside the windscreen. If that's the case and your unlucky enough to receive a court summons it's your decision to either pay up or contest it. 3 points and £60 if the road is a 60/70 limit, or up shit creek if the road was restricted to 30/40. Double speed limit = ban time......one last thing, courts don't take to kindly to folks contesting the evidence, keep that in mind......the above comes from experience last year I was done in fife Scotland, I saw a van on a quiet 60 limit road thought to myself fuk it no plate on the front and kept it nailed, I got a court order stating 99mph....I think the guy in the van did me a favour!

Thanks guys, road was a national speed limit dual carriage way should be 70mph I was doing 90ish and spotted him a good 100meters away, van was parked side on to me on bridge. I braked and slowed down to 70. We'll see fingers crossed

With the van side on, it would have to have a camera looking out over the other lane and then down, i think you would be out of range by then, dont forget that the police somtimes put a marked vehicle on "display" just to keep presence and all us minions in check. no reg on the front of the bike, van side on on the bridge, no other support cars, was it even booking people?

As Meensy says, its 3 points and a £60 fine, Loud cans? they will hear you coming and target, there are screens inside so they know what they are looking at!

However - They sometimes just target certain types of traffic, white van man for instance! and yes they have forward and rear cameras already set up! The operator has to press the trigger though to take a pic, depends if he is a TRX fan or not.

If you contest it, you will probably lose, more points, possibly 5 and a higher fine, plus court costs!

Dont forget if your leathers, helmet or bike are unusual, they will find you, you don't always need a number plate!

Hopefully your speedo is out, as over 30mph more than the speed limit could result in a court visit anyway!

96 in a 70! 3 points and a £60 fine, just over the brow of a hill in Devon!

Does the stretch of road have signs saying speed cameras operate on that road if not then they cannot do you as far as I know these signs have to be there but can be anywhere up that road.

That was for fixed cameras, not camera vans!

You have 14 days to receive the letter. After that unless there is a genuine reason why it was not delivered (you moved house with no forwarding address), it is not valid.
