Ah well, here goes for my first post on this forum, I've been observing for a while and have to say its refreshing to see the number of people from all over the world and you all seem to be a cool bunch.
As for my knowledge of braking, well I've been working at what was Girling for the past 15 years in their aftermarket braking and also race a a big twin classic sidecar (weslake) in the UK and occasionally road racing on the continent, so for what its worth:

Wavy discs are very much a recent trend and yes they can sport the benefits of reduced mass and yes you can expose a certain amount of surface area for the heat disipation but in reality the majority of road use would not subject the discs to the kind of heat cycles that would make any appreciable difference.
Yes you would get an increased rate of pad wear and there is always a question mark over the raw materials used in aftermarket product coming from China, not that I'm saying its rubbish but there is sometimes a tendency for inconsistencies in material content and you could never be 100% certain. I would suggest for general road use they should be okay but if you start to get any brake judder then the material has deformed and its surprising how only a miniscule amount of variation can amplify itself through to the controls.

By far the best material for brake discs is cast iron but for motorcycles you've got all of the related cosmetic issues but in the old days all brembo braked Italian machines had cast iron discs however they rusted and looked shite. If you wanted to be really flash you could go for a high silicone/carbon content which gives greater stability over the heat cycles.

We use cast iron discs that are drilled but the surface area of the drilling should not be smaller than the disc surface area as a blank.
The biggest gains in braking would always be in the friction material, racers will always spend on brake pads as the benefits in lap times are worth having. Again racing pads are a different game to road material as they require the heat for them to function properly and a good set of road pads should be more than sufficient ( I'd rather recommend the better ones than slag off the bad ones). Also you should change your brake fluid regularly as it is a key component in you brake system, we change it every 2 months for racing but still we only use a dot 4fluid just so long as its fresh.

On a totally different note I've bought a TRX (from a guy on the forum) and it is being delivered tomorrow evening - CAN'T WAIT \:D/ :headbang:

Thanks for the comments, 'best first post' hey.. flattered.

I'm not sure who the question was to about best pads but I'll give my two penneth for what its worth. For a road bike I would always go first to the OE, so if Yamaha are still sell the pads then they would definitely perform the best. In terms of aftermarket I would look at Pagid, they are an excellent performing pad material. Then there is a company called performance friction although I'm not sure of their range for motorcycles. The thing is there are a lot of aftermarket pads available but quite frankly they are shit, its just that they are advertised well. Like a lot of things, you get what you pay for.

'Onestopshop' is run by a bloke called Wal Saunders who also races a classic sidecar although not at the CRMC events. He runs the firm that was known as PFM and supplies a range of braking products and also dry sump kits for the modern engined racing machinery. I believe he holds good stock and to be far he knows his product.

I actually run some carbon pads manufactured by TRW but they do need the heat in them to work but then they are pretty impressive, the stoppie I did on the sidecar at Knockhill was on BBC Scotland but everybody else in the paddock royally took the piss. However I would actually recommend them but the availability needs to be improved. I think a good stockist is 'Performance Parts'.

Cheers all

I've used EBC HH for ages now (and tried plenty before that). Best compromise for road and track use IMO

Ermm, don't know actually, we didn't go to East Fortune for the Bob Mac this year or last when the classic club where at Knockhill but we may have met in the paddock. I do a fair bit of travelling around so 'm sure we'll meet up at some point and if you go to any of the CRMC rounds just come an look us up in the paddock and we'll get the kettle on. :D

I had a set of these S3 wave discs on my CBR600 while it was alive and they did a decent job. Was quoted $800 from the local stealers for a set of big name discs, so the choice was easy at $135AU each. The guys at S3 are great, I bought them while he was still doing biz out of his house and he did me a good deal on the 2 fronts and a rear.

Personally I think wave discs don't suit the TRX unless you've done the whole R1 / R6 mix up. These more traditional ones I like, but its all down to taste.
