TDM900 kit from TTS

Post by Killerwhale » Fri Sep 04, 2009 2:26 pm

Well, i´ve heard a rumor that TTS do a 960 big bore JE kit for the TDM900 so i thought i´d check with them when i bought new piston rings for mine. Here´s the reply:

We do a 937cc kit using JE pistons, the cylinder on the 900 is nicasil plated so will need to be bored then plated, we can get this done if you send us a barrel cost for the pistons £250 plus vat the bore & plate will cost £300 plus vat, plus shipping.
best regards
Paul

A friend of mine has a TTS 960 kit on his TDM. Maybe they've reduced it to 937 for reliability - they had 2 goes at his to sort out piston slap! Kent cams, Carillo rods and a bit of mild porting.

Quick engine though, 90 bhp and torquey but a bit harsher on vibration than my standard size bores

Hi,

I would like to refer your conversation and ask you, if you have some more experience of the 937ccm piston kit of TTS for the TDM 900 engine (original 897ccm).
In a call with Paul from TTS he told me that he can offer those 937ccm. It has a compression of 11,0:1. The bore diameter of the 937 piston kit is about 94mm (original 92mm), so, the distance between the cylinder are at least 5,12mm (original 7,12mm). They also offer a modified head gasket specifically for this 937ccm kit (especially for the smaller distance between the cylinder).

What kind of experience do you have about this 937ccm? Do you know someone who can say something about life expectancy?
I'm also thinking about skim the head a little to get a compression of 11,2:1, do some "head work" for better filling and modifying the engine valve timing.

Thanks a lot,

Willi (from Cologne/Germany)

Well, a friend of yours at the German TRX forum did a 900 conversion and did not do much more than skim the head (quite a bit though)...can´t remember specs but got 124ps out of that...wich should be a bit over 100 on the rubber so that post above with 90 on the wheel does not seem to be worth it. I´m driving down with a 900 engine next weekend to my mech who has his last race weekend this one....and will post the findings/results.

A friend of mine has the TTS big bore kit - the first one was a noisy one so TTS had to tighten up the clearances to enable it to be suitable.

It has been running that way now for around 6 years although i don't know the mileage as he's got a few bikes to play on

@ Killerwhale
I think that, if you just skim the head to maximize the compression, the whole system cant handle the demand for longer than maybe 20000-30000km....if at all....

@ dandywarhol
This sounds interesting. So, your friend has the 937ccm kit (thats the Big Bore Kit?). What kind of experience did he made (especially torque and revving)? What do you mean with "the first one was a noisy one"?

Many thanks in advance for your informations,

Greetings from Cologne,

Willi

Dandywarhol explains it in his first reply dewill. Piston `slap` because of the bore to piston tolerances being too wide. This has now been re-calculated and tightened up to create less clearance between piston and bore.
