Newbie trx owner having problems?

Just purchased trx and the engine seems to be a little lumpy. I have been out and fit new spark plugs and an oil and filter change. I can rev the bike up while stationary but when I try ride the bike it struggles to get past ten mph. Stutters etc and won't make power. The bike has not been used for 18 months so I have also drained old fuel off and changed for new.
Please does anybody have any ideas as to what this prob may be..?

Carburettor `furring` is the most likely cause. The alloy drillings can almost close up from the build up of oxidisation of the alloy when carbs are left with stale fuel and moisture in them.
A damn good strip and clean, ultrasonic would be best. I`m lucky to own an ultrasonic cleaner so it`s not a problem for me.
You may well find the emulsion (needle jet) tube and needles are worn when you strip the carbs too.
I take it you`ve checked that your wheels rotate freely?

Mine isn`t that exact model but it is the same capacity. They are great for gently agitating anything dirty buy ultrasonic (sound) waves.
You can get mildly acidic solutions that will eat away at oxidisation without harming the parent metal and / or rubber or plastic parts.

Obviously you need to be careful with temperature settings.

By the way, is the clucth sound, not slipping? Try putting the bike in gear with the engine running and clutch in, take the revs up to around 4000 and let the clucth out slowly, the bike should stall if you hold on the front and rear brakes. If it doesn`t when the clutch is let out it`ll be slipping.

So if I were to strip carbs down and clean etc would I then need to get the carbs balanced by a Yamaha dealer or would most bike mechanics be upto doing the job?

Let us know how you go with those fixes. I had a car behave like that because the spark was compromised. Distributor cap had a fault. Check that you are getting good spark.

My virago did that when the regulator was on it's way out. You may be able check this by chucking the multimeter on the battery when it is running.

If you don`t move the syncronisation linkages between the carbs they may not need re-balancing per se, just setting up for mixture etc if they seem to be out. If you are not competant at doing it then yes, entrust it to a bike mechanic.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge Mincehead thanks for deleting the other post too Not too sure whether to tackle this job myself or get someone else to do it. I really don't want to get ripped off though. Anybody know of a good mobile bike mechanic in west Yorkshire ???

Mate,

Before you get into stripping carbs and buying expensive new kit, try some other simple things first.

You've done new plugs but have you checked they are both firing ok when outside the cylinders i.e. take them out and keep the caps on and earth them on the motor and see if they spark.

Next off I would check for fuel starvation, most likely cause would be a blocked or kinked fuel line or breather somewhere. Check them all over.

Thanks trixynut I just fit the plugs to be honest and never checked the actual spark. I will check this. Regarding breather pipes etc. should I disconnect all pipes to carbs and fuel tank and blow em all out? I know fuel is coming through the fuel tap with ease because I drained it off through it. It's weird the bike ticks over and revs up and you can tell the power is there but pops and coughs a bit. As soon as you set off its as if the fuel and air doesn't hardly get through at all. I just can't understand why it will rev up stood still but not go on the go. ???

I've had dodgy coils give these symptoms, will rev up standing still but break down under pressure.

TRy spraying them with wd40.

Thanks for all your replies guys. I shall be checking all these points been made this weekend. Just another question.. When I picked the bike up / purchased it the guy who sold me it got it out his shed a couple of hours prior and it absolutely poured it down with rain for the whole two hours and the bike was soaked. Are these bikes sensitive to water, could water get into electrics??

A TRX is no more sensitive to water than any other motorcycle to be honest. Badly fettled and maintained bikes will always suffer from such things though.
I periodically seperate wiring terminal blocks and connectors, a squirt with an electrical contact cleaning spray (readily available from Maplins in the UK), then re-assmble them with either silicon spray, silicon grease, or if in areas where a large volume of water may be getting at them sealing them completely with clear silicon that will set around the connectors.
If you use a low bond strength type you can ALWAYS get them apart again if required.
Carplan do a cheap clear silicon RTV compound in a tube, great stuff for these uses.
