Cracked swingarm

Post by pbear62 » Thu Mar 01, 2012 3:13 am

Hi guys, Was giving the TRX a clean (again) on the weekend & noticed what may be a crack in the swingarm
It's along side the weld where the crossbrace (between the wheel & the rear shock) is welded to the main LHS "arm"
of the swingarm. It's hard to be certain without dismantling everything for a proper check - could just be the edge of
the weld maybe? Has anyone else had this?
Once you've had black - you'll never go back!

Have heard of one other...hold the machine upright and have someone put pressure from the other side down low so it loads up the left swing...look close for movement..id reakon its a shadow as these swings are pretty solid.
Penty around if it needs replaced.
Be careful not to pressure wash into the pivot bearing...even though it has an end cap seal..
A dry pivot bearing can sieze , even though , as it has needle roller bearings..it wouldnt neccessarilly cause the big alloy swing to fail.

Althoughh very rare, this has happened on a handful of bikes.

good news (in addiiton to the fact that you have found this before it failed) is that s/h swing arms are not expensive

I had a crack in mine, and replaced it with one from a wreckers. Cost me AU$125

Details here:

Details of the bearing sizes if you decide to change the swing arm and swap them out are here:

If you need a swing arm spindle Yamaha will be looking for $125 but I have a spare so let me know

rather than replacing it with a TRX swinger you might want to do an upgrade,

I am not sure but I am sure somebody here could tell you what some straight swap options are, this for example may be an option:

Thanks for the info.... What looks like a crack on mine isn't where "con rods" was cracked near the pivot - mine is on the crossbrace between the
two sides of the swingarm (behind the rear shock & in front of the rear wheel - where the dog-bones bolt on) ie: looking from the RHS of the bike
it's visible next to the horizontal weld on the LHS of the swingarm.
