headstock bearing replacement

Had a bit of a search but didn't much on head bearings but didn't really find much other than this thread. I guess it is best practice to replace headstock bearings but I was wondering if there was a way to remove the lower bearing without messing it up and place it onto another stem/yoke?

Drix..the oem steering head bearings are of the caged ball bearing type..with a one set on the lower and as i found two sets to the upper....when i ordered my new set from my Yamaha dealer, they came as tapered rollers ,and one for the lower.. and one for the upper race...same for a trailer wheel bearing.!...just tension up the new system until nil play is had, and lock the top nut down...delightfully simple
The lower steering bearing ..can be removed by heating the locking collar with a blow torch to expand it and carefully working around the base with a wood chisel useing the lower bearing race to push off, the bearing wil be the same which is why a new one would be the best way for a best job scenario.

I did think of heat but that would damage the dust seal at the base of the lower bearing so I guess a new one it is then. Went to Yamaha this morning... circ £50 for the lower bearing and £40 for the upper... I guess they don't sell many very often at that price and I ordered online instead!

Have you tried a local bearing manufacturer/stockist? they may well have something the same, and probably a lot cheaper as well.

Any ideas on getting it back on? Last time I took the bearing & stem to an engineer who pressed it on, is there a DIY way?
