Sticky gear/clutch at temperature

Hi folks. After some time away from bikes I picked up '96 TRX with 4500 km on it yesterday. Cosmetically it's a bit faded, apparently spent a lot of time uncovered and unused, but mechanically seemed OK. However, on the way home I noticed that gear changing got a bit sticky, with neutral/1st gear transitions at the lights being very hit and miss, and false neutrals more common. When in neutral, the bike idled at ~1500 RPM, but in first gear with the clutch in, ticked over at 3500 RPM. This occurred after about 30 minutes of really terrible stop/go traffic (radiator fan kicked in a few times even though the weather was cool and wet) so perhaps temperature related. I'll take it back to the dealer after Easter (3 mths warranty) but I was wondering if anybody has any suggestions. I did a forum search but didn't find anything relevant.

I´ve had the 1500 clutch in and up in revs "problem", it goes away with the TPS mod...i had the question up in here but no one had the same. Ended up with a programmable CDI instead.

Weird! It`s got to be down to the TPS surely, what else could it be?
Normally when you lift a clutch you`re increasing drag at tickover and revs will drop!

Yep, that sure looks like what I saw yesterday. But only after riding for half an hour; it wasn't doing that when I started the trip. I searched for "tps mod" in the forum and found a lot of posts talking about it but haven't found the instructions for the actual mod, somebody have a pointer?

Same here, only when proper warm...this was shot after a good 2h of riding.

You need to dicsonnect the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) from the left hand side of the carbs first. The wires just unplug.

I suspect a bad earth may be behind this, perhaps up around the instrument console, their must be a link to the neutral light feed (current) looking for a better earth and finding one through the TPS circuitry somehow.

Me guess is the CDI itself OR TPS mod, when changing CDI to my TPS modded one it went away.

Thanks fellas. I can't actually ride it this weekend (on-call), but now I can happily spend some tinker-time instead.

If its been sitting around for ages then at least change the oil and lube the shift linkage

sitting for sometime may cause the clutch friction plates to be oil contaminated.
a couple of things to do.
first give it the said oil and filter change, ride it and whilst in motion and under load apply and release the clutch lever with a flicking motion. This may clear the friction plates surface somewhat.
if its still sticky, drop the plates out (you will need a clutch cover gasket) and clean the plates both drive and friction with brake cleaner(aerosol is good), dry them and give the friction plates a light sand if there is enough meat left.
if they are at all suspect, replace the pack whilst its apart.
but having said all that, if you just bought it then take it back first.
if you dont ask, you can't get told no eh;)
