My dad sings that all the time  the line you're thinking of is 'on Ilkley Moor bah tat' which means on Ilkley Moor without a hat. Tat is Cockney rhyming slang for hat. Well "titfer tat" is really but it gets shortened.

Tat also means rubbish, as in cheap stuff you buy at a market.

English lesson over for today

Dunno where "tit for tat" came in coz they don't look much like hats

Err, thanks Jak... I think? Maybe the tat meaning rubbish version makes more sense - instead of paying a native girl with money they used to give them beads and other tat for a bit of... yes, I think you get the picture? :P

Kinda like reminds me of that episode of The Young Ones where they're desperate for money, so Neil gets a job as a policeman. He goes to break up a party. Warlock answers the door and says........"come in mate........and take the tit off your head" (referring to the Bobbies helmet)
Priceless!
