Re: Excessive Tinking on Cooldown
i had a similar problem. It took ages to get the TPS set up right, I would get it sorted then go for a ride and after about 10mins it would start dancing again. Ended up replacing the TPS.
You can test your TPS using a multi-metre, the manual tells you how.
If you do go down the route of replacing the TPS Yamaha charge a whopping $330, however cheaper ones can be got from Suzuki and a few other bikes share the same TPS.
If calling a wreckers dont ask for one for a Yamaha, ask for one from a Suzuki (wrecker rule of tumb is price at 50% of original price and original Suzuki is cheaper than Yamaha....yes for the same part)
Also keep an eye out for wiring looms, could be cheaper to buy a loom with the TPS attached. I ended up getting a loom from a FJR1200 with the TPS still attached from a wreckers for $50

Re: Excessive Tinking on Cooldown
Cheers Paul...good to know. IIRC the bandit ones work also. I've already swapped the tps once. I did what bagmaker suggested and cranked down the -ve terminal...seems to have sorted the issue out for now at least

Yep...it's working fine on the mik's. Seems stable enough now but I've the bypass mod bookmarked if it starts acting upcobbadiggabuddyblooo wrote:but the tps was working when back on your std carbs..yes??? it's only when bolted onto the FCR's... this is the issue I found with mine, thats why i just bypassed it..

Re: Excessive Tinking on Cooldown
Regarding the TPS, I have a theory:
The TPS shaft on the FCR's is a spring-loaded arrangement, unlike the solid shaft on the original carbs.
It seemed to me that the FCR TPS shaft was prone to sticking a bit. I suspect that the process of fitting the TPS onto the shaft exacerbated the issue as the short shaft didn't seem to slide easily into the TPS, and I suspect that the assembly was pressing up against the carb body.
I found that when adjusting it, I'd get it right but if I tapped the TPS or carb body it'd go out of adjustment.
The answer....lubrication!
I smeared some light oil on the shaft so that it could slide easily and settle into place inside the TPS. I also squirted a small ammount of light oil (Innox)around where the shaft goes through the carb body. This seems to have solved the sticking problem.

Interesting. It's gotta be something like that. Weird how in my case the tacho dance begins only after 10 or so mins riding.

Re: Excessive Tinking on Cooldown
Yes it does indeed, `hang up` a tad if not lubricated periodically, I found this too and also found one of the best things to lubricate it with is ACF50.Excalibre wrote:Regarding the TPS, I have a theory:

Re: Excessive Tinking on Cooldown
followup after a lovely holiday in Carns/Daintree: I lubed my shaft (phoarr) and it seems rock solid (pffffffffft) now.
Interestingly the 4K mark was hit with the tps almost all the way clockwise this time but I'm leaving well enough alone. Thanks for the tip chaps

Sometimes things just go better with lubrication
