SHIFTING DOWN PROBLEM

Post by bubbaad » Wed Jul 18, 2012 6:15 pm

Just got the bike back on the road and it rides sweet apart from gearing down from 3rd to 2nd gear. Shifting between 1st and 2nd is fine as is shifting up and down between 3rd and 5th. Shifting up through all the gears is fine but when I try to shift down from 3rd to 2nd I'm lucky to find it one in ten times. I've tried various ways of shifting down but it doesn't seem to make any difference. If I stop and turn the bike off and wait a minute or so I can then gear down.......PLEASE HELP !

There might be a technical reason which the more experienced members will point you to as i'm a TRX newbie but this tale really happened to me on more than one bike but did happen on a TDM850 (with a TRX motor in it)

After my first ride i decided to make the gear lever pedal sit HIGHER as i couldn't flex my ankle enough to get underneath it properly. i adjusted the rod length till the pedal sat higher, tightened everything up and went for a ride and couldn't hardly get ANY gears

Turns out the rod was hitting the shaft because the 'knuckles' were now at a funny angle, i had to start afreshh with the knuckles in a 'half way point' on the spline and THEN make the rod the right length so that when i 'used' the pedal the rod didn't foul on anything.

I had a similar problem on a dirt bike after a minor spill in a rocky gully, rode out of said gully in 1st gear then couldn't get ANY other gears, i thought i had bent the sel shaft or damaged the gearbox internals, turned out the pedal had been bent inwards slightly and was catching on the side casing when i was lifting it up from 1st gear.

Fixed it just by gently pulling said pedal away from the engine a smidgeon

If its a mechanical fault ............... wait for someone who isn't guessing like me

Good luck

Ian

You mean the LONDON MC DONALDS COCA COLA olympics......Load of bol*ocks......Couldn't agree more Mince. Yes I sorted the gear shifts out ta, 10mm spanner a pair of pliers and a half hour of start, stop, adjust, did the trick.

I edited your swearyiness in your last post a little, we tend to try to put an extra letter in or an asterix here bubbaad.
Good job on the newly adjusted gear shift, it`s often something simple. =D>

yes glad to hear you sorted that one out
open a can of worms mate .. I saw a few things here about store owners asked to close because they sell other items as well as coke, asked to cover their shopfront signage... I thought after the last world war things where put in place to stop these sort of tactics

Yep...Only McDonalds allowed to sell chips !....Unless it's Fish+Chips....??? So a chippy can sell you Fish+Chips but not Pie+chips.......or chips on their own.......Seig Heil.......
