alternator cover

Post by billy budge » Tue Dec 12, 2006 12:46 pm

hi blokes
has anyone ever totally removed and stripped the alternator cover on the rex??
I wanted to get the clutch and alternator covers polished but im thinking the alternator covers gubbings inside dont come away from the cover??
i have removed the stator by undoing the 3 screws and removed the 2 screws from the pick up coil but all that came away was a clamp that holds down the cable. didnt know if the pick up coil actually comes off and if it does how do you do it as i dont want to force it if its not meant to come off. haynes book dont really mention that it comes off, can anybody help me please.
cheers

im in the process of refitting the newly polished cases and was wondering what suitable sealant to use for the rubber wiring grommets on the alternator cover side.
the sealant that was in there originally was a grey colour so im wondering if its a specific motor trade type sealant. any ideas chaps??
cheers

I think pretty much any oil resistant (proof) liquid gasket would be okay. Yamaha sells the stuff in a tube. I have a big old tube of some 3M stuff that I have to poke holes in to get to a soft part (it's gray too). Don't use anything that gets hard as it might crack as the case heats and cools.

i just weld everything up. I can take a pic later.. But the engine isnt finished yet (spare engine).

Use loctite gasket sealant.. Works a charm (with gaskets that is, its NOT a replacement).

Halfords sell a Loctite product called Flange Sealant (5699) which looks like a fibre reinforced silicone based sealant. I used to use something called Rhodorseal which was similar and bloody amazing stuff, heat resistant like you wouldn't believe - I used some on the exhaust ports of my old VF750F when I couldn't be arsed to get the proper gaskets - it never leaked and was still flexible when I next took it apart over 2 years later! If this Loctite stuff performs half as well then it will be my choice of 'universal' sealant!

Oh - it's grey too!
