What is regarded as high KLM for the trx850?

Just passed 185000km, bikes running better than ever (just run-in I think). Got 476km out of the last tank but was running on fumes as I went to the petrol station. I am thinking the new needles and jets have worn a little and improved the mixture. Plus it's been cold (5-10 deg C the last few weeks).

I would REALLY want to know why one can get out 476km when i get 215km to reserv on moderate driving

Mine where not even close to that bog standard with 24kkm on the clock!

Mine niether, that`s near 300 miles to one tank of fuel, I`m not sure I ever saw 200!

Havent run on a full tank for a while,... however very sure you should see around 280 kays and the the 40, or so on reserve..
Never had the problem of totaly run out of fuel, but i know that the bike will go for at least 40 kays after the first starvation COUGH ---on the smooth motorway and upright..[not sloshing about with corners]...
these figures are gospel , as i ride every day...standard quality carbs and standard gearing at highway speeds

I consistently get between about 40 and 50mpg

so about 6ltr/100km, so on an 18ltr tank thats about 300km, or 185miles

the valve clearances and carbs were done recently

Just cracked 190,000km. bike still runs great.
Did an oil change today, has used about 1 litre in the last 10,000km .
I use full synthetic Nulon 15W50 oil for the last 3 changes, now changing it approx every 10,000km. The oil I used previously used about 1 litre every 2000km.

Still getting around 410km to reserve. Why is the economy so good? one of the great unanswered questions. Maybe everything has loosened up so there's less friction between parts.

I fiddled with the position of the TPS, moved it clockwise at approx 180,000 then turned it anticlockwise at 189,000, I have to say it made no difference to anything, economy = same, engine roughness = same . Can anyone enlighten me what the TPS does? and what are the symptoms of it not working?

its advances the ignition timing for larger throttle opennings.

To test it:
1. Turn on the ignition (dont start the bike)
2. Disconnect the plug from the TPS.
3. Reconnect the plug to the TPS.
4. Look at the rev counter

If the TPS is set/working correctly the rev counter will show 4000rpm

To adjust it you basically just move it till it shows 4000rpm.

12,000 on mine and still goinh strong so should last me at least another 60 years !!!

68000k's and getting over 420K's per tank on a conservative run, if i cane it, the fuel consumption goes to around 360-380 a tank

With the warmer weather, got 428km not quite to reserve before filling up. Definitely warmer weather = better economy. If you live in sunny England or northern Europe maybe a HAIS would be the go.

Mate what sprockets are you running?

Just running std sprockets, 17t front, 39 rear. (16t is not a good front sprocket as it is a hunting tooth, odd numbers are better on chains)

That's a good highway combo Brenyw,should give you about 100kmph at 3500 rpm...I am on an 18 front with a 42 rear that put me 3700 rpm at 100..but if I am going for a ride in the mountains,, ill change to a 17 front..only takes a second.

Just passed 200,000 this week.
At 199,000:
Replaced rear disc
Oil and filter change
New rear tyre

Haven't done tappets since 129000km (when the timing chain was done), doesn't seem to be any problem here but the cam might be worn. I am so used to the bike I don't really know if it's down on power.
Still runs well and still get consistently 410+ km to reserve.
