You're a patient man Kenny, waiting 2 years for an answer. 
I modified my airbox by taking off the rubber snorkels and using filter foam to seal around the bell mouths. I only fit this system when i do long distance rides to stop insects and rain/snow being sucked in. Normally i just run with Ramair filters. Starting is like Kayla sez ,two twists of the throttle and bingo. The carbs sneeze a bit when cold but i use a throttle lock to warm it up for a minute or 2.

Ditch the airbox and use foam filters over the trumpets.

Yeah ,i leave the K&N air filter in place when i use the air box.

I can't remember, it's been too long since I had the bike and I've had too many since then to remember details. I did raise the tank by 10mm or so at the front and (I think) the intake trumpet might have been opened up. Or that might have been an SZR I had in the meantime, I don't know.
