One reason fo fuel being suspended in the airbox is when the inlet valve snaps shut there's a pressure wave sending the air/fuel mixture already in the manifold (wrong terminology as there's actually no "manifold" on an engine with separate carbs per cylinder ) back into the airbox. This is even more prevelant when "hot" cams are fitted.
It's also the reason that engines with separate air filters for each carb tend to run rough at low revs - the fuel/air normally fed back to the airbox would help supply the other carb and cylinder but in effect it's "robbed" and escapes to atmosphere in individual filter per carb motors. Hence the smell of unused fuel on separate filter/unfiltered setups.

When "hot" cams have been installed, they usually tend to have exhaust and inlet open at the same time for a split second. When the hot exhaust gets a back pulse, it actually forces burnt gas up the inlet. The length of your exhaust is quite a factor in this too. But if you have a stock cam grind, it wont allow this in the first place.

Ive seen some bikes that have fuel all inside their air box. Like, its puddled in there. Each track session they wipe it out. Purely because the cam / exhaust has a HUGE throw back. BUT the old grumpy bastard likes it.. Raced the same bike for like 25 years almost. Runs on methanol.. Such is life.
