Whats the go? No electrics?

Post by meemo_meh » Wed Feb 28, 2007 11:01 am

Hey all, went to fill up Sharky yesterday at the servo, then came to leaving time and it simply wouldnt start, no lights, no indicators, no neutral light... just dead... ? No previous signs of failing electrics, went through all the relays and fuses and they tested ok, no sign of loose wiring or dirty contacts... and battery tested ok... managed to get a lift home to pick up the trailer and pick the bike up. Got it on charge now anyhoo, just incase it is a warpy battery.. So far I can not find any causes, and the bttery has the correct charge but doesnt nessesarily mean that it is ok, got a spare battery off a mate that I shall try tomorrow... apart from that, any suggestions??

Dunno, i'm just stuck for ideas so no harm done by trying swapping over the battery also. All the other elec bits that I tried swapping over one by one did no good. moh!...... Have a working TRX being used as a guinea-pig for 'what should/shouldnt have voltage', so far teh most noticable diff is when I turn the ignition key, I lose the charge out of the battery.... ???? .... In the other TRX it remains @ 12V, but on mine it reads 12V before ignition, then after key is turned it reads 0V...
:-( Figures.. this weekend is the only spare weekend that I've had for months, wanted to go riding! hpmh.

Have you puled the actual ignition barrell off and checked for loose connection/short circuit in the wiring coming out of the barrell/in the barrell?
I ask because on my old Guzzi the ignition barrel was rooted and a similar type of thing was happening. Ended up just running everything through an on/off switch and turfing the ignition barrell.
Hope this helps.

12v for the battery is low should be 12.5-12.8v

where are you measuring the voltage ? I don't think it should drop to zero even if it the battery is us as this would mean a really good short circuit with massive curent which would have blown any fuse.

The only things not fused are the starter circuit and the Rectifier/regualtor.

Try disconneting the cable to the starter relay if a another battery doesn't work.

Yup, tested the igition wiring loom resistance during switching and it was all ok. Voltage on battery during test was a little over 12V, I just rounded it off (lazy.. ;-))

So here's a wierd one for you:

Put he spare battery in, but still no power.. tried putting my battery in the other TRX, it worked... ok... So I said to myself, 'bugger it, gonna need a new battery eventually anyway' so I lashed out and bought an Odessy. Put it in, and now the bike works fine!

In theory: my battery was on the verge of being ca-put. Had voltage when tested, supported a minor LED circuit but when a larger load was put on (aka Sharky circuit), it open-circuited. It worked in the other TRX as it does not have as much electric extras that mine has... And since the spare battery also did not work in my bike suggets that it also is near carking it too (a month older than my battery, both 2003 batteries).

Hmm... bloody electrics... Guess thats the price we pay for having a bike modelled on an Italian Ducati eh? teehee......

*sigh*
