Reducing the reach... handlebars or clip-on risers?

So I've been toying with the idea of street-fightering my TRX but all I really want is to reduce the reach to the bars. The forks have been dropped about an inch (pic #1) so I could add some risers for the clip ons like in pic #2 but I'd prefer a decent set of bars like in pic #3 (which CULater posted on these forums)...

Can I replace my top yoke with one from a TDM850?

Can I replace the clip ons with brackets that will take handlebars?

Will the bars fit under the fairings?

Can I use TDM cables?

Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated!

Go to the gym, duct tape your hands to a pull up bar and kick the block out from underneath you. After a couple days you should be set... :wink:

MX bars on a bike with a fairing. :puke:

I'm sure others will be along soon with some real advice but for me, I would go with risers if I had to.

BTW, you don't really need anything other than the main bolt to clamp them on. That little 6mm thing doesn't do much but line them up. When I raced mine, they were mounted under the top yoke, stock bars just lower. Why not try raising them as high as you can and mess around with the angle a bit first. If you find something comfortable you're good to go. Just don't clamp them higher than the actual stanction tube.

Really? Isn't there a risk that it will rotate around the fork?

Not as long as it's torqued down properly (tight). I've done umpteen hours at the track with mine, never a problem.

And I have the left pulled in slightly more than the right because of my busted up shoulder. No stinkin M6 bolts in there. :wink:

Very keen to know if a tdm yoke will fit myself :D Im binning the fairing on mine due to it being rather snapped and cracked and while im at it im thinking of putting on some moto x bars Im just not sure if I should drill the orginal yoke and mount some bar risers that way or maybe a tdm yoke if that will work? or go buy the £125 version thats all done for you to just bolt on

Late TDMs - Mk2 on - have 43mm forks, so you'd have to look at a Mk1 yoke.

I wouldn't want to drill the stock yoke. You'd end up going straight the strengthening webs underneath.

The advantage with what Max said is, if you have an off for any reason you dont break bars they just rotate around with "extream force" and you can reposition and keep going. Ask Kev :lol:

I was gonna say that as well

Mine have only ever been attached by main bolts and they stand up to me bracing my huge weight against them in braking.

I also strap my bike to a trailer using the bars and they have never moved

Well I moved the clip-ons as suggested and it is a little more comfortable.

They just fit under the fairings too ;)

So what other options are there for mounting handlebars?

i just bought some bar risers and drilled through the standard top yoke the first time i did it.

:D Problem with drilling through the top yoke is that it is not the same thickness all the way through. It has strengthening ribs built in. If you want to drill the top yoke, you really should be buying a billet top yoke. Theyr'e not cheap though.
