Earlier this year, plans were made to go to Phillip Island for MotoGP round with 6 mates (none of them on TRXs though) Like a number of other TRXs, mine was ok around town but used a bit of oil (100ml in 300km) with a bit of spirited open road riding.

Not wanting to have the worry of topping up oil while on the road, I decided to give my baby a bit of a freshen up before I went. Had the barrel deglazed (bores were badly glazed) & replaced rings, faced valves & seats & fitted new stem seals & ran it all in on Yamalube mineral oil for 800kms.
Replaced the oil & filter (still using Yamalube mineral oil) & loaded her onto the trailer for the long, boring haul to Adelaide. Unloaded in Adelaide & headed off for the Island via Great Ocean Rd etc, spent three days at the GP then back thru Melbourne, up to Echuca, Mildura etc & back to Adelaide - did 2808km of riding over 2 weeks including slow stuff through towns, lots of "pretending to be Casey Stoner" on the twisty bits & plenty of open road riding & doesn't appear to have used any oil at all.
All is good!! - just need to do a really thorough clean now & everything will be perfect

That's great news you know, because I planned works like this on my own bike for this winter. Although I was a little bit in doubt about the piston rings, I'm almost convinced! How much cost the ring sets ? I think they're only available at stealerships, because I haven't seen them elsewhere.
And just to be sure: barrels deglazed = to hone the cilinders, right?

I've being saying this over in TDM land for yonks - over careful running in can cause the bores to glaze and cause oil usage. I reckon more TDMs use oil than TRXs cos the former are run in gentler....................
good to hear you've got a result.

Hi Tarwetijger,
I purchased all parts genuine from my local Yamaha dealer. Rings weren't that expensive - I think about AUD $70.00 per cylinder. I was also advised to get genuine stem seals (about AUD $8.00 each) - not aftermarket ones that "suit a few different models but may not be a perfect fit for anything in particular". And yes, deglaze is a light honing of the bores - I got it done with a proper set of hone stones as it gives a better, more parallel finish than using a "bottlebrush" flexible hone.
When running the rings in, use a base mineral oil (with no friction modifiers etc) & vary your speed & revs - ie: don't thrash it but don't let the motor lug in high gears either or the bores will glaze again. Do it - you won't regret it!

I think I will, cheers!
I heard that before, about the aftermarket stuff. KEDO seems to have a good kit though, with all the seals etc. you need.
2x70 + 10x8 = 220 AUD$ = € 135, that aint too bad.

Nah, I think he means winning races at full health

Understeer - when you hit the fence with the front of the bike.
Oversteer - when you hit the fence with the rear of the bike.
Horsepower - how fast you hit the fence.
Torque - how far you take the fence with you.

If whingeing a lot and taking long holidays makes you ride like I saw stoner ride when he was leaning into turn one at PI, I am going to become the biggest moaner and holiday king out there! Man, that ducati of his sounded almost as good as my rex. About your top end rebuild, did you hone the bores yourself?...Rick54

Hi guys, A couple of answers for you: Mine is a '96 Australian model which had 43,200kms on the clock - now has 46800 after running in & doing the trip. I had the work done by a guy I know who used to work at a Yamaha dealership but now runs his own business from home.
Valves & seats were done by a company who specialise in motorcycle engineering.
Re: Casey's "holiday" - I reckon monkey face may not have won the title if Casey had been able to put in a full year - roll on 2010!!

Thats rather interesting how different motors perform in this manner. I know I have an Aussie 99 model with 103,000 up on the clock now and with oil changes every 3 to 4,000k's I'll only have to top up the window from the low oil mark once. That said I find i can be a bit cruel and heartless to her some/most days and 9000rpm finds its way around the taco with ease. Most of my riding tho I'll do 120 to 160km in a day when out and about... And it still seems to be a well spirited motor with just a cam chain replaced at 100,000k's ....(pipes and FCR's too
