Airbox

Post by trixy7 » Sat Oct 23, 2010 12:09 pm

Just fairly new to the site but have tried drilling about 6 30mm holes to the front of the airbox in the hope of a bit more power or at least responsive and I dont know if its in my head but it seams better allround especially at the upper rev range, I was wondering is there any other simple things to try? I have a K&N filter, D&D pipes and recently jetted and dynoed.
Also this tps thing what is it and what can be done with it.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Mate,

Pipe and filter are the obvoius things. Try a dyno run to grt it tuned up all nice and sweet too.

May want to go 1 tooth less at the front or 2-3 teeth more on the back sprocket to give better accelleration and the 'feeling' of more power.

Next step is carbs/big bore/big money: been discussed many times before....

TPS is Throttle Position sensor. Advances or retards the ignition depending on position of throttle for better fuelling/less emissions.

Search it!

Cheers.

I'd start hunting for another airbox if I was you.

It might seem like a good idea to drill hiles in the box but CV carbs like still air - too late now though

Most tuners will recommend you raise the tank (with spacers) and cut away the snorkel and remove the foam but not drill holes.

TPS mod is a waste of time (IMHO) with CV carbs - have a hunt for my post that shows the differenjce it makes with a tuned motor and flat slide carbs.

As TN has said, the next stage of power is big money. I'f you want to go fatser, sort your suspension

Thanks - good points, when you say the carbs like still air does that mean it will be running to lean now because of the forced air?
Suspension is not bad, front forks have been moded before I got it.
You know how it is we always want more power etc etc.
I have 1 tooth less at the front and 2 more on the back and seems to work well.

still air.. ok.. Get a bucket of water, fill it up, have a hole in the bottom of it, stir the living daylights out of the water, and see how it comes out. Now let the water settle and be still, then repeat. This is a rough explanation.
stock CV carbs like "still" air.. Its how they react and mix fuel into that air going past.

As phuk said, suspension is a REALLY solid investment. No point having a hugely power engine if you cant handle it. Revalved forks, or a front end change over is like night and day on handling. Possibly a new swingarm if thats your thing, but not really all that needed. Theres numerous posts on suspension tweaking. Have a hunt around and see what you find.

just going thru that same scenario.
previous owner cut holes in the airbox but i didn't know, hadn't taken the tank off, no need !
worked fine with the std exhaust(last plate cut out) and filter.
so, went to jet, found holes, didnt think about cv's dont like messy air.
jetted and with a K&N and 2-1, it caused a big hole from 1/8 to 1/4 throttle
felt spongy doughy.
taped the holes and raised the needles.....sweeet !
so i'm now getting a new lid.
how many times have we heard ... "the factory spent so much time and money on research etc etc etc."
