What have I done!?!?!?!

Post by highlander » Sun Aug 21, 2011 6:22 pm

In a fit of ebay madness ... yeah the usual story: good deal, dumb head. But why another TRX? The chappie had put new tyres and bearings on to pass MOT so I thought there's some value right there!

So when I get home and look at the paperwork and scour the forums I realise it's a '95 black 4nx engine in a '96 bike. To be fair I was told "here's a box of spares" and a photocopy of the '95 V5 the bits came from, long MOT history. So at least it was all above board.

Taking a closer look I found Coerce rearsets in a box and some kind of funky exhaust system I can't put a finger on, looks like a full system with gradually expanding diameters to the carbon-look cans "Advantage by concept projects" never hear of this but could this be titanium headers to stainless long link? Any knowledge of this system welcome, it's in better condition than the stds on the red 'n black and may be worth the swapping over? Looks like one of the two had been raced, blown up and two bad bikes to make make a good one with some spares which are going on ebay soon ...

The pipework looks like an Over copy, maybe it is Over stuff with different cans on it to be honest.
I`ve some Over pipe work / headers, you`ll need to post images of the point at which the front pipes enter the collector 2 into 1 into 2.
Looks like stainless to me, it`ll be light as a feather if the front pipes are titanium.

Those pipes look as if they were made by the same people who made the ones on my TRX.

The material looks odd in that the headers section looks like it might be titanium, the link looks like stainless but it would be strange to mix this in a complete system. I am not so sure the cans are originally part of this system, I think there's a '1990' date on there. I'll need to take more pictures tomorrow, might just take the whole system off for a closer look...

Is the gradual widening of the pipes beneficial, it would seem intuitive that this is better/more natural than the standard thinner pipes to end-can-including-late-widening-link. I guess OVER have a good reason to widen the pipes earlier for better breathing. Bottom line is if this will improve the riding experience and is worth swapping over? I guess I just have to try it! Which means I have to take the standard system off - that is going to be a bitch; it's pretty much 100% rusted on.

Rearsets now on ebay, what are these worth? The new one for over £200 are a joke, surely?

I would tend to agree with you dixonj the spring attachments are definately the same. Maybe looking at it again it`s not a true Over copy as the cans are 50.8 (2") bore by the look of them and the Over cans are a much bigger bore 63 or 65 mm if my addled memory serves me correctly.
Those discoloured seperate header pipes are consistent with them being stainless highlander, the difference in heat between that which the front pipes receive and the collector piece / rest of the pipework will give those variations in colour and patina. Plus you must consider the application of salts in water suspension when the bikes been used on British roads on wet winter days adding to the metallurgical degradation.
Oh and stock front pipes and collars rusted / corroded on? It`s a TRX / British road salt problem that many of us have had to deal with, unlike those lucky Aussies who don`t find they have the same problems.

Yes they did, lasted two hours  !!

Maybe could have made more from them but I would not have paid more so everyone is happy, which is the point.

Let's see if anyone buys the 1995 switchgear, I think that will end up in a dark corner of my container ...

Don't know who made them but they are good quality and fit very well. I am sure some one on here will know who made them.

A late update but here's the nameless exhaust and cans. I'm just getting the forks re-sealed and it will be ready for sale soon, £1000 only!

Hah! Cans in the bin now - the carbon was torn and needed rewrapped, the end caps knackered for the token DB killer inserts, etc.

I only kept the main pipes - seems like light weight stainless big bore and polishes up OK so will swap them out on my TRX against standard pipes and stick new Delkevic cans on next year.

Pipes polish up nicely though. My first time with a polishing kit and it does take an age but nice way to chill out with the radio on:

Are they oversize headers? If so would be interesting to know the effect they have on the bikes power delivery character

from the balance pipe join back to the cans I'd say yes, I'd have to measure the rest.

I would not be able to comment on the improvement as I'm convinced my bike with std headers still isn't running tip-top - jerky up to 3k rpm and disappointing acceleration up to 6k rpm, but maybe that's the nature of a 5-valve 270-degree twin. As I said before my GPZ 500 parallel twin revs much more freely from 2k to 8k and that's with it over-geared from standard!

It'd need someone from the forum with more time on a known good bike to tell the difference with a 'bum dyno'. and no, I'm not selling them [-X .

I can make measurements for the oversize header project upon request but someone with a true Akra or Over system would be a better reference.
