Type of engine question

Post by BEERO » Mon Sep 19, 2011 3:39 pm

Hi all!
My TRX has a strange colour of the engine - painted like 3VD (TDM before '96) but the oil tank is in above the gear box - like it should be on a TRX... I was wondering if there is a site or so, where i can check the model of the engine from the engine number?

This is the mystery :

Go to the downloads section of the forum and look for the frame / engine number prefixes.
It looks like it`s simply been painted an odd grey to me.

Post up your prefixes and numbers, the members will soon tell you what you have. Where in the world are you by the way?

Edit:

Sorry lazy me, having checked I can see you`re in Bulgaria.
So the European prefix of 4UN3 is what you would expect to see (European) perhaps 4VN2 if it was Swiss or Austrian.

4EP would appear to be a Japanese market TDM850 motor:

Japanes Models
TDM850('92.2) 4EP1 Engine Number 4EP-000101~
TDM850('93.4) 4EP2 Engine Number 4EP-002101~

Have those numbers been stamped on, does it look original? Can anyone else confrm this 4EP prefix as being TDM?

The front brake calipers would indicate that it is not a Japanese import, (Brembo's if it was)
Can you fit TDM motors in a TRX? or is it part of one, Where on the bike did you get the numbers from?

I took the number from the pointed from the both manuals (TRX servise manual and the XTZ/TDM/TRX manual)- the spot over clutch cover... and the number looks pretty original (no signs from rewriting attempts). In the documents I have with the bike the frame number and the engine number are pointed correctly. Also the great mystery is how the previous owners had fitted the oil tank above the gearbox - no one knows :?

But anyway, Thanks for your help mates. I have to sinc. the carbs and will take a closer look of the bike to see if the engine is the only not proper thing on the bike(i suspect that the front fairing is a little bit cut from the right side). My new exhaust pipes and the right back footrest are already purchased from UK and traveling to Bulgaria. Now have to fit a nice pair of loud cans and hope to make it one shiny little Trixxie(with an old parallel twin :( )

4EP is Japanese TDM - your one has been painted in a (nasty) grey colour

And those 850 lumps bolts straight in. There are virtually no differences between the 270 TDM850 and TRX850 engines (the notable ones being slightly different 1st gear ration and lower compression pistons on teh TDM).
